Electric Shavers?
« on: March 07, 2010, 07:27:54 AM »
Okay all you manly men!  I need a new shaver.  The present one, from the Phillips/Norelco Arcitec series, is p*ss poor.  It can't handle a heavy beard, the blades clog easily and don't disassemble for a good cleaning like my old shavers.

I need an electric shaver (only!) that will take on a heavy beard, give a good clean shave, and can be properly cleaned.

Recommendations, please!  I'm looking less presentable than usual, and determined to fix that.

Sir I am probably not as hairy as you but my hair is thick thick and I have yet to meet an electric razor that can stack up against my face. In the past three years I have spent over 1500 dollars on electric razors. None of them could hack it, luckily they all had satisfaction guarentees. So in my opinion you're better off with the blade.

Thanks, Caveman.  A blade is not an option.  The quest continues.

Caave, where ya been hiding at lately?

I use a Braun 7526 (old model) for my hairy Irish mug but I am fair haired though I have a lot of it.

It does the trick for me but every year or so I need to buy a new cutting block for it.

I have used a Braun model #7526 for the last 5 years.  I wouldn't say that my beard is heavy, but when I've let it go for 5 days, my razor still gets it done.  The best part is the automatic cleaning/charging station with the cleaner/lubrication solution, it's like using a new razor each morning.  I think the 7526 has been replaced with another model.

I have a Braun 7570 as well as a much newer Braun 8995. The 8995 has been a disappointment as it doesn't cut as well as the 7570 and seems to actually pull many hairs. Ouch that hurts! Not only that, but the replacement blade & foil runs about 10 bucks more than the old 7000 series. The 7570 has been a great shaver, but a few years ago it got wet and screwed up the lcd display and since then doesn't accurately show the amount of charge left in the batteries. Other than that it's still my main shaver.

My pop told me that an American company bought them and Krups out a couple of years ago.

Never found one that worked for my beard. If you can't use a blade for Religious or medical reason you never get a clean shave. I know people that use an electric twice a day and that helps. Or you could wax.  ;D

This isn't meant to be a stupid question even though it may be but, does hair removal gel work.? If it did, shaving would be a breeze...

I have a Philips/Norelco  8240 that I recently inherited from my dad. It's the only electric shaver I've used so I can't compare it to anything but a blade. To me it's convenient in that I now shave 3 times a week rather than once or twice. ::) It gets the job done but it's not even close to doing the job of a blade. The best thing about it is that it has a trimmer blade that pops up from the back. It's very handy for the mustache/goatee, sideburns, ear hair, nose hair, armpits, pu...oops. Too much information...sorry.  :-[ ;D ;D

You're all poofs. I shave with my bayonet and clean my teeth with a wire brush. Don't ask me what I wipe my butt with, if I tell you, you'll all be too frightened to go to sleep tonight...........  8)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

To get back on topic, I would say in my experience the electric shavers do not shave as cleanly as a blade. If I could no longer use a blade the Remington was pretty good.

Mark just about killed me with that toilet paper post!

Terry, my outfit was too manly to have bayonets.  We improvised as need be.  Didn't shave much, either.  Just hacked our beards with a close combat knife or my trauma shears.

So, I bought a Norelco/Phillips that was more like the old one I had. 8200 series with the HQ9 blades.  BobbyR and others are, of course, right that electric won't get as close as a stropped razor; but I use the shaver instead of a blade for religious reasons.  (How'd you know, Bobby?)

I thought about a Remington.  My dad's old Remington seemed to work forever.

So far the shaver is clearly good enough for my realistic expectations.  The important thing is that it can be cleaned and maintained much better than the newerfangled one I had previously wasted my money on.  Can't get a good shave if the darned thing gets clogged and doesn't disassemble for cleaning.

I was friendly with the Catholic and Jewish Chaplains. They were close friends and we would talk. I remember the Rabbi telling me that there was something about not letting a sword or blade touching your face.

Sometimes if nothing was going on we would give them a lift to some remote bases so they could counsel the men there. The Priest would sprinkle the ship with some water and mumble something and the Rabbi would mumble something. When I spun up they would both start praying intently. I thanked them for praying for me one day. They both laughed and the Rabbi said  "you!, we are praying for ourselves!!!!".  :(
