STUPID QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS
« on: June 26, 2010, 04:25:55 AM »
OK that is an eye catcher of a title and why do you thing I put it that way? Well I am new to the CB750 SOHC. I have been riding it now daily for a month and so far I have had 5 people tell me that I am crazy for riding a CLASSIC motorcycle on a daily basis. Mine is a 76 CB 750 F and I LOVE it. It has now 5662 miles on it and it screams. I have managed to look at these people and really think about who has been making the comments. They are cage riders. NONE of them ride motorcycles. This does in a since make me feel good in a way that they acknowledge that I am riding a COOL motorcycle but yet it makes me feel sad that they know nothing about it except that it is old and that we should put things like this on a shelf and stare at it. I was wondering if others have had the same experience or am I the only one. What else has some one said to you about your CLASSIC motorcycle?

I have a 76 550 ss, I often ride with a group of 4, 2 custom Busa's one of which is turbo, a custom stretched purple Harley and me. When we stop my old 550 often gets as much attention as the rest sometimes more.

the reaction is often "that is a nice old bike, how far from home are you?"

then you can insert a "Fonzie" comment here

Classic, well I guess. Rare? one of a bazzillion. During certain years Honda America  sold 3 million units. There are still going to be parts out there for your still  low mileage bike. 5 k miles is just break in, hopefully it was flogged a bit to make sure it holds up, seated the rings well. Maybe do some more flogging just to make sure.

After that, see about the synthetic oil best engineered for the right specs and who knows. One post said the primary chain gets sloppy and starts sawing on the case at 50-60k. Some say ride past that mile marker If things re okay. Maybe not as much longivity  without  synthetic oil which was invented, or marketed 20 years later, and not available for those hi-mi bikes when they got their miles.  I hear wonder stories of high mileage vehicles with that stuff.

Race your hyabusa buddy to 100k miles, is what I'd say. Bet him $5 bucks. His will be in the corn field 3-4 years by the time yours turns 100k.

The bike I have is a 1970 CB750 K1 that hasn't been running since 1983. The first order of business for me is to get her back together and ride the piss out of her. People that think these bikes won't do well being ridden everyday are just people that don't know. Of course, it takes some care and maintenance to keep em going in top condition but isn't that every bike? I can't think of a bike these days that can have 100k miles on her and not be in serious trouble. These bikes were made for that kind of riding. If you find documentaries about bikes in general they will always have something about the 4's in it. First superbike, a bike that could go 100k miles with timely maintenance and on and on.

Do your research (if you like that sort of thing) and learn all you can about your particular bike and any others you might be interested in. The next time someone says something about your bike and its age, make sure you have something to back up why you ride THAT bike. On the other hand, you could just give them the finger as you blow all 4 in their face as you take off. personally I like that last suggestion but some are a little more tactful in their responses.

Good luck to ya!

I enjoy the CB750K's with a passion. I enjoy it even more when I get the "thumbs up" from various people. Pulling up next to someone at a stop light and watching them size this 750 up and down is fun. I have not had any negative comments like how far do you think that will run, etc. Nothing but positives here.

The most popular question I get is something like "Do you feel comfortable riding an old bike like that any distance". I used to give them some explanation about Honda's reliability. Now I just say, "well after about 100 miles my ass starts to hurt, so I stop and walk around, then I have to stop again in another 100". I guess may ass is not as young as it used to be."

Attention is nice sometimes, but I hate it when I'm sitting at a traffic light and somebody in the truck next to me (it's always someone in a truck) wants to ask all kinds of questions about the bike.  I can barely hear them over the engine and traffic and through my helmet, and they have an even harder time hearing me through my helmet.  I try to be polite, but after a while if they're still talking, I just point to the helmet, make the "I can't hear you" signal with my hands, and stare straight ahead.

I am usually happy to discuss my bikes when I'm out and about. It's always fun to be able to explain something on the bike that catches their eye, or listen to their story ;D Never had anyone say I should put it in storage?  Perhaps your bike is a more perfect stock condition bike 8)

I, like every one has their bad days, recently I walked away from my Tracy after I parked it in the line up area for the Ferry.
Saw 4 guys coming from different directions. I was in no mood, the bike had given me some grief that day ;)

Lets see your bikedl52163 ;D

I know guys that ride some serious classic iron (a Vincent, a '32 Indian, and '42 Harley come to mind) - all ride a couple hundred miles a month.  Not a lot of miles but the owners and machines are getting up there in years...

Putting a machine, especially a mass produced "one in a bazillion" vehicle, under glass makes no sense.  Ride it, man.
It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.

Sometimes I think they are just jeolous because they don't have one.

I get appreciative glances and comments often when I am out.  My 76F is in mint shape so that has something to do with it.  They definitely do draw attention. It is pretty well known that running old bikes, cars, etc requires a bit of skill, patience and ingenuity.  I think any negative comments  come from people who are incapable of doing things themselves,  who expect everything to work every instance, and are really put out when they don't.  They get bent out of shape if they are inconvenienced in the slightest. They are the "don't do it yourself" or "can't do it yourself" crowd.
