Same here with the 750 stockers, but TT's bike is a real gem with a great story.

Love TT's 1970's "look". It's not often you find that collection of genuine 1970s accessories, just as they were when they lined the Interstates, one after another, by the thousands in those days. Boy, that brings back good memories!

I think we need some more pics and some stories to go with them. For me, the engine draws my eye the most. I'd love to see some closeups of those power plants. I'm between 2 bikes right now, rather different from each other.

Dang it...I am a true stocker fan and those cafes are tops!!! To top it off toss in that beautiful 750 and TT's stocker this is one of the toughest months to date in my opinion. I love the red, but TT's blue and gold just has my head spinnin'. :o The pendulum has swung your way this month. Great job there TT. I know a bunch of the guys would like to see more close ups of that blue bomber when you get a chance.

So, as far as more info on my bike, I have been working on it since August 09. My goal was to build a cafe bike with as little money possible but with as big of a change as possible. So the task began, I started modding parts, alot of what replaced one part was made from it's predecessor. If I could use the original part to make a custom part I did. I changed the tank put knee cut outs and clip on cut outs on it. Built the tail from aluminum, frenched in a tail light. The list is quite long and I won't bore you with the trivial details. I have a list of highlights:

Weight 365 lbs dry
Build cost including title and purchase price (everything) $1418
Aprox hours worked on 295
Number of donor bikes and cars 7 (cbr600rr,vtr1000f,Supra,geo,f150,cb750, subaru impreza)
Color: Ghost Pearl White found on the Audi R8

Here is a shot of the motor as requested.

I'm slowly getting to the build threads, one by one. I really like it when someone thinks outside the box and creates a gem from a turd. I discount the color usually and go for the details, the lines and taking what you know and making a bike that is an extension of the owner. I really like the diversity this month as each bike, on its own, could easily be a BOTY. Damn!  8)

I think I'll vote when I know what the bikes and the owners have been through together, good and bad, and what the final project ended up becoming out of what the owner learned along the way.

I already posted most of this in the nomination thread.  But, some here asked for bike stories.  So, this is the fable of my Blue Cb550F.

When I first saw this bike, it quite literally had a 1/16 to an 1/8 inch of dust covering it, tires flat, battery corroded, speckled/splattered with white interior house paint.  I wish I had taken a picture of it's forlorn state.  But, I didn't think I would get it at the time. It appeared to have been driven into the garage, parked, and then ignored for 12 years while life went on around it.   It probably would have sat longer, but the owner wanted to use the garage for a start-up company and it was in the way.  I aired up the tires (they held!) and did a compression check and one was way lower than the rest.  The paint was wonderful, Bar controls were still a deep black, and no rust inside the tank, original muffler still good.  They were asking $300.  I  said with the poor compression, I could only offer $100, and wound up leaving, as the person doing the selling wasn't the actual owner.  Two days later I got the call asking to come and pick up the bike.  I brought the truck, got the signed over title and pushed it into the pickup bed.  I asked if they wanted know what happened to it after I put some work to try and make it run.  They said, "no".

I washed and polished parts that I knew would find a home on another bike, if not this one, lubed the sluggish throttle and clutch cables, cleaned the carbs, put in new gasoline, did a no-cost tune up, and put in a battery from another 550.  It started right away, but ran badly at first, some head pipes are too cool.  I synced the carbs and it ran better.  All the electrical worked.  The more it ran, the smoother it got.  I did a hot compression test, the low cylinder had gotten quite a bit better.  Hey, it's worthy of an oil and filter change!  So, I did that, along with rebuilding the front brakes and changing the fork oil, put in a new air filter, spark plugs, caps check good.  Front tire does lose air gradually, so I swap the front wheel from another 550 onto the bike.  The rear tire has a permanent flat spot, but I've ridden 550's with flat rear tires before.  ;D
Off for a ride.  Everything tight, feels like a bike with only 8000 miles!  Pretty danged fast, too.  OK, it gets new tires.  The fork seals are leaking, so it gets those new, too, and the front forks need refinnishing.  I wish I could remember which clear aerosol I used, as it still looks good without any yellowing.   Clean up the fuse box clip terminals as they are running too hot to touch.  Clean and treat every electrical connection on the bike.
I put about 50 miles on the bike and do another compression check.  They are all the same!
I buy new factory shocks for the rear, do more cleaning and polishing.  It becomes my commute bike that I rotate in with others.  The seat looks new, but starts to split at the "seams".  I get a brand new one from Honda, and put a vintage luggage rack on that I got with another bike. The backrest cushion vinyl was rotten spitting, and falling away.  So, I made a new cover for it, including the zippered pocket on the back of it.  The rack and backrest hold my Igloo lunch box perfectly during the commute.  And, the wife really likes the backrest while riding around as she feels less likely to fall of the back and this relaxes her greatly.
The cold mornings in winter make me seek out the National windshield, which can be installed with no modifications to the bike.  It can be stock again in a matter of minutes, and I can wear less layers on the way to work in the morning.

I cannot explain why, but this 550 is the fastest stock one I have ever owned.  Not by a whole lot, but it is noticeable when switching among bikes. 

I will confess this is not a showroom bike that stands up to pristine close inspection.  I use it.  And, as long as you don't get closer to it than 10ft it still looks new.

I still think it is a pretty nice example of a bike I couldn't own when it really was new.  Now, I notice the clearcoat starting lift away on some of the gold stripe on the right side of the tank.  Like I say, it's a 10 ft bike that gets used.  I think this forum may be the only "show" it's entered in.

Hope you like looking at it as much I do.  But then, I get to ride it!

For me it all began with a Craigslist $200 bike. I knew I wanted a 550 and had a small budget, so this was it. It ran but not good, the clutch was bad, leaking forks, frozen brakes, bad tires, rusted chain, missing side covers, electrics a mess. It was a starting point.

So I had a plan. I contacted Benjie from Benjie's Cafe Racer. He built for me a Dolphin tank and metal seat combo, battery relocation kit, headlight bracket and Pinas bars. I always have loved his work and knew I'd build one like this someday.

I cut the factory rear stamped steel mounts off since they look horrible, I fabbed up my own and lowewred them & moved them back for a more comfortable riding position. I recycled rear sets from an R1 off ebay, with some easy fab work they are slick.

For the licence plate I made a small box to house two 9 volt batteries and a switch I wired them in series to power my led licence plate lights. They work great and the batts should last a long time.


So then after looking at the dash on other bikes that were empty holes where bars once were, I fly cut the top tree and under side of dash for a super sleek look.



So now i took the kerker 4 into 1 and decided to modify the can portion, it was too long and low, so I sectioned the can for a shorter, more modern look with a little upswept look.

page 2. So when the wheels went to powder, they were too rotten to reuse, so Buccanan's made me new Mandap wheels, I had them PC'd and sent back for new stainless spokes and they laced and trued. They do a great job. Dave Quinn supplied me some new Hagons. Rode them today, what an improvement! I found some finned covers on ebay and way overpaid, I had to have them. A stainless bolt kit for the motor, a Barnett clutch, Hondaman ignition, I rejetted until the bike runs perfect with pods and a short exhaust. So the paint got done by K&W Custom Auto Body, a paint shop near where I work, they did a great job. I rebuilt the forks, brakes, hubs, new tapered bearings, new progressive fork springs. One day at work, a coworker threw away my hand controls, front brakes and fork springs so I had to repurchase them. New tires, 110/90/19, 130/80/18. Oh and Benjie's floating gauge bracket.

Phase two for the motor has begun. DR SOOS made me some Gentleman's Express pistons, MReick is working an a stage 3 rocket cyclider head for me, Web is supplying a 38b cam. Its 1/2 done and I can't wait. So here's some pics. I suck as a photog, the paint is so shiny I can't avoid reflections.

I just rode 70 miles today, horay!
