Sandcast Honda CB750KO value....
« on: April 02, 2010, 01:38:52 PM »
Hey guys, I just bought a 1969 Honda CB750KO with motor number in the mid three thousands. It is an original sand-cast 750...... the only one I have ever seen. How much is it worth and where can I find more info about these bikes. It appears to be stock except for exhaust, seat, and shocks which can all be fixed. Also, it is black with gold stripes. From what I saw, the paint looked factory. I have seen red and orange bikes in pictures..... but no black bikes. Man, that sand-cast engine is one wild looking motor..... more like a race motor than a street motor, no wonder everyone thought of it as a street going GP bike. I am ignorant about this bike, so any info would be helpful........

Yeah, no black paint on original sandcast bikes.

There is lots of info on here. There is also at least one sandcast site.

They only came in red and turquise in 69.

Sounds like yours is pretty complete, how many miles? and what country are you in..

The little proper bits can nickle & dime you..

Does it have sharp edge on front & back of front fender? grey caliper?
Sunken ignition switch?, plasic, unfaded guages...?

This group demands pics...........and motor and frame IDs.

If you are asking how much its worth you must be willing to sell.  Sooooooooooooo How much did you pay?

If it truely is a sandcast in the original frame, it should be worth several thousand bucks. The cost of parts and labor to get appeal up to the $20,000 level will tell you what the 'as-is' condition of the bike is worth to the broad market.  Now for someone who has to have one.........???

I am picking up the bike tomorrow morning. It was purchased at an estate sale and I am almost embarrassed how much I paid for it, which I ain't revealing  :-X :-X :-X. I did talk them down a few hundred dollars from the ridiculously low asking price  :o :o :o. I will take some pics tomorrow and post them. It has a really nice vetter fairing, tail trunk and rear rack  ??? ??? ??? which will be removed tomorrow morning and sold on eBay  ::) ::). Tires are Continentals and in excellent shape. I will start dismantling it and cleaning, buffing, and polishing all parts. A guy named John stopped at my house yesterday and said he knew where a bike was that I might be interested in, then told me the price, kind of bike, and location....... I had never seen that guy before.... kinda weird  :o :o. I was working on a couple of my Ducatis in the back yard and I guess he saw my restored Honda CB550F and just stopped to talk  8) 8). So I looked it up and bought it :P :P. It appears to be a real sandcast bike with the rough cast engine, finned covers, and funky air filters. The serial number is CB750-1003979..... the engine number is just a few digits off that number. Any info will be appreciated...... and it will be for sale as soon as I get it looking nice and mostly stock. Will give the guys here a chance to buy it before selling on eBay. Selling price will be much less than the 20 grand. I would keep it..... but I already have 14 bikes..... no more room..... and a wife who wants the house remodeled. Thanks, Dewey Greear.

You may have trouble getting all the bits, but the more stock it appears the better.
I would pull the sprocket cover off and look for chain damage as soon as you can..

Honestly, the value depends on how complete it is, and the condition of the bike.  Not all Sandcasts are worth $20,000.  That price is for a 100% original bike in FULLY RESTORED condition, and will only fetch that price when a TRUE enthusiast (who has the money handy) wants it.

I have bought three sub #3900 sandcasts relatively cheap. However, the cost in parts to make then perfect can be a fortune. I don't think any price near $20K is possible (even perfect bike) in this economy.

If you get $3000-6000 for what you describe, that is probably good; bad or so-so paint, chrome, instruments ect.

Pre #3900 bikes have left side horn .A little more rare is pre #1000; most valuble.

Good luck in your ebay sale. You never know what will happen.

There's a Honda dealership in the state that has a Sand around #850....unrestored....rough as hell from what I hear, but all there.....I'll have to ask about it again.....I was told it was around 850.....

Oh....and that it's NOT for sale!

If you want to sell the sand, someone will buy it and give it a good home......but you didn't hit King Tut's tomb.....it isn't priceless.

I can't weigh-in on the value of your sandcast bike but regarding the color (black), I think I read somewhere that they were offered in black but not in this country.  So, yours may have been brought over here later.  As far as what was offered here in 1969, no black that I know of.  Good luck with it.  Nice find.  If you plan to keep it because it is something you always wanted then the price is not an issue.

I think what's it's worth will depend upon the pictures you provide. The real question is whether you are willing to put in the many many thousands of dollars finding those impossible sand cast parts to do a proper restoration. I'd say if not, sell it to someone who will. They are a plenty!

For more info you could go directly to the sandcastonly.org group.  Some are also members here.  I would be very careful about polishing. Its nearly impossible to get the pipes clean without removing them. When you take pics try to highlight the front fender.........right handlebar switch......clocks..........ignition & key.............pipe ID (should not be any) at right footpeg below the oil tank......inside of gas-tank for 'wrinkles' directly below the filler.........and of course the other usual shots.

OK guys, here she is...... my diamond in the rough. Just talked to a guy in Louisiana and he says to consider it sold. I gave him what I thought was a fair price and he took it. If it falls through...... I will post again. Of course, I never thought that I would get $10,000 for a bike which needed some work and I didn't get it. Would sure like to keep it (about $2500 and it would be nice...... according to prices currently on eBay) but my wife says I don't 14 motorbikes.... rare or not. Anyway here are some pics......

Wow that clock on that camera is really messed up! Great shots tho.. I was going to go with that Air cleaner instead of the pod's however I could not find one. Now I have Havoc getting me some pods. It looks like a really good paint job.. GL with the auction on the fairing, it and the other items should go quick..

The bike really is better than it looks in the pics. It is mostly just dusty from sitting in a heated garage. Most of my bikes look like this when I get them so I know what will clean up and what will not. New exhaust, seat, and a nice paint job along with partial disassembly, cleaning everything as you go including nuts and bolts, replacing any small things as necessary and it would look like a restored bike. It really isn't that hard to take a bike like this and make it look nice. I checked out prices on eBay last night and could have this bike looking like new for the low side of $2500 plus my investment price. This includes outsourcing my paint (stock Honda colors are available from Color Rite). It would take about two weeks of work. Attached are a couple of bikes which I paid cheap money for which turned out nice...... and one bike that I paid cheap money for which was already nice.....

You found one of the 'got to have it' buyers........Good for you!  Just so you know you could get in trouble real fast......If you will repaint my K0 and put new decals..pipes..airbox..chainguard..seat..and a few other smallish items on for $2500 my bike will be in your garage next week!  Just that......I'll do the tune-up and buy the chain and tires.

Anyhow..........sometimes it just good to know that another sandcast 750 will be on the road....or in a museum.

Does the inside of the gas tank have the "wrinkles" visible through the filler neck.
