son's first ride
« on: April 20, 2010, 03:45:05 PM »
Jordan, my youngest son, and I went out this past Sunday afternoon.
About 80 miles for his first ride ever. Yep, first time riding a
motorcycle.
After about 15 miles I pulled over to check with him.
It was a bit cool and he's wearing my gear.
I ask him if his ankles were cold. The boy's sort of tall.

Dad set a slow pace.  ;D

I distinctly remember my first ride.  It was with my dad in 1985 in southern Ohio.  He has passed but that memory never will.  Thanks M for keeping the dreams and memories alive!!!
It took 10 years but she's finally done!

Are your ankles cold.

You're not embarrassed, are you.  Amazing.

Ugh....I do not envy that one.  I'm still not wild about 79 North.

My first ride (outside of the Learn 2 Ride parking lot) was to bring my bike home from a family friend's house to my parents place.  I got to the bottom of the driveway and fell over.

Then I got on the highway for a few miles.

yep, he went out with me when he was about 4 year old. So technically it's his first ride on his own. :)

We went out twice this weekend, Saturday was a nice clear ride dodging some clouds.

Sunday was a great mountain ride coupled with some interstate to get around Roanoke the quickest.
The last 17 miles to the house we were caught in a gully washer, this coming across Pilot Mountain in
the twisties were folks wreck all the time with just a bit of rain. We had streams running across the curves.
He did great!

Here is our stop at the T-cup tree, Fritz had seen us stopped at an overlook on the parkway and
joined up with us. Ernie, that's an R80St he's riding, beautifully restored one too!

You know, I've got a lot more discussion from the Ducati forums on his Jordan's first ride than I have on here.
And y'all call yourselves Honda people. ;)

Had a chance to ride with my dad back in the 70's.  Still remember hitting a swarm of bumblebees at 80 mph.  Dad's bike had a windshield, I had a comp shield on.  Sounded like ball bearings hitting us.  Miss ya dad.

Hey Robert, ya know, my Dad and I have never ridden together (on different bikes). That's kinda sad too, considering that we had a motorcycle shop in the family and had been around them nearly all my life. But, by the time I was old enough to ride on the street, HE wasn't doing any riding on the street. I remember 2 occasions that I DID ride with him on a motorcycle though. The first time I was young enough that I sat on his lap, while going down the road and on the gas tan, when we stopped. That ride was on an Indian Brave. The other time I remember was when he was to lay out a "Lime Run" one Sunday (I was in my early teens) He operated the motorcycle and I threw these small paper sacks of lime down ever so often, to leave a trail for the others to follow. We were on a BSA Shooting Star (I think they were a 500cc twin, not sure).

Only took my Daughter on a motorcycle one time, that I can remember (it had been a very long time before I was able to get another one, after I had gotten married, we just couldn't afford one). I had worked a buddy's Yamaha 360 Twin (I think it was a 360 anyway) and, when I got ready to take it for a spin, Karla wanted to go and so I found a helmet and loaded her up. Funny part is, as we went by another buddy's house, his wife was outside and I stopped to see what she wanted. She started chewing on me for having Karla on a motorcycle and said, "I'll bet Brenda doesn't know you've got Karla on there!" I told HER, I'll bet YOU are WRONG and why don't YOU just CALL her and TELL HER Yourself!" >:( And, she DID! ::) Brenda told her right quick that she KNEW Karla was with ME, She KNEW that Karla Had on a HELMET and that I had made sure of THAT AND SHE was comfortable with the fact that I knew how to ride motorcycles quite well and she needed to be concerned about her OWN family! ;D  YEP, I remember to this very day, that Brenda turned her every which way, but loose! ;) I was kinda glad that she hadn't gone up to our house to tell Brenda, she'd have sent her packing right quick. :D

I do three big trips a year one weekend with each of my sons, and one just for me (that's the one where I log a lot of km's) I can't wait till they are old enough to ride their own bikes. For now they just help me work on mine
If ever there was a creator of bastard sons, it is the open road, for she has claimed so many young men yearning for freedom......

My first ride was last month.  I was supposed to roll out with my Pop.  He passed in December.  I got my 78 cb750 in Jan.  I wish I had that memory.  I'm sure it was great.

Bill, I bet Brenda would have straightened her out for sure!  ;D  I didn't realize it would be so great to
ride with my Son. It's a cloud nine kind of thing.

Asom, I'm sorry to hear you didn't get that chance. Your not to far from us. Anytime you head this way to ride

he rides with me in spirit.  My shop is his memorial.  we shopped this bike together.  he was very excited that I was going to get it.  My next bike will be one like he had.  I think it was a 65 Honda nighthawk.  I found some online, but they were very expensive and parts seem near impossible.  It's been a rough couple of months but the bike is running now and every minute I spent in the shed was like therapy.  Funny thing,  I never knew my dad had a bike until I started talking about this one.  It seems my Mom made him get rid of it in the 70's when I was born.  My wife works for Indian Motorcycle so I don't have the same problem.  He was going to get a helmet and his license again just to ride my bike around the block.  I think it would have been so awesome.  He probably would have got his own in a matter of months...

Love ya Papa Ray!

Asom, I'm glad you got to learn a whole new side to your father while you had the chance!

If riding could be about one thing, this would be it.  Somewhere in the family photo album is a picture of me around 18 months old in the summer of 1983 on the back seat of my dad's '82 CB900C.  8 years later came the matching helmets for when he and I would go on a 14 mile ride (it seemed SOOO much farther).  Many more years later, I finally went on that same ride on my own, following close behind my dad.

Fast forward to the present and we're still at it.  He does the following now, but not much else has changed.
