« on: April 29, 2010, 01:01:49 PM »
remove the vin plate from the steering neck? Please advise. I just picked up the frame from the welder and need to take it to the powder coater.

AND, brother can you spare two VIN tag rivets while I'm begging??

There was a post where a guy showed some round headed brads that were dead ringers. He got them from the local hardware store.

VERY carefully take a small, narrow chisel and tap around the head of the rivets then knock them right through the holes and out of the bottom of the neck

What they are is a Type U Drive Screw.  Much safer in my opinion is to drill them out after carefully center punching them in the exact center of the head and using a drill that is the diameter of the screw.  Then the head just falls off when the drill gets to the screw.  You'll still have some fun after that because the plate also has glue under it.  But you can and should remove them before painting and especially powder coating.  Check out this link for more info:

You can easily knock them out by
tapping on them with a socket extension
from INSIDE the neck tube.
With a little luck you may be able to reuse them.
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

MarkB,

Thanks for the 4 Type U Drive Screws aka tag rivets. Looks like I'll be removing the VIN plate tomorrow in preparation for powder coating thanks to your gift.
