1975 CB750F Cinder Cone
« on: May 07, 2010, 03:09:30 AM »
I have enbarked on an uneducated Journey to education by way of the road of hard knocks (or not so hard with the help of this forum.) by rebuilding my first bike and engine. I got it from someone living on a lake for $400. It had a frozen engine and about 2 cups of water in the exhaust manifold and head. :o. So far i have ripped it all the way down to a practically empty crank case and bare metal frame. I have painted the tank red with 4 white pinstipes that run into the rear cowel. Looks Sweet 8)

So Im racking my brain in the ER, at madigan army medical center where I work on what i can do next. I have poured through the posts and have found a few things that are somewhat affordable to me now and some I know I will have to do later. Heres what i came up with so far.

1)Finish sandblasting and removing grease from my frame, swingarm, center stand, electrics plate, and battery box.

2)Remove old a** tires and clean/ beadblast rims. (Thinking about black rims with red spokes and white wall tires for wheels.....Now should I powder coat them or just paint em up???)

3)Paint headlight bucket

4)Strip paint of calipers and repaint white??? not to sure about this one.

5) Design my custom guage face plates. (Does anyone have a template or do i need to make one so others can design and have their own printed? anyone interested?)

6)Clean wire connections and grease em up dielectricaly :)

7)Clean up parts with brake cleaner.

8) Design custom oil tank.

9)Rebuild my forks

10) polish everything

Does anyone know some place near tacoma that lets you weld, powdercoat, sand blast and paint like techshop in Cali and Ptown oregon?

Any other sugestions?

I was thinking of using the 78 forks to do duel discs infront then it was recomended to me just to switch the Rome from left to right so they mount with the breaks behind the forks. I will then have to make brackets to support modern breaks. not sure about the discs yet though. Well see.

So i took my frame swing arm and tripple trees to get coated yesturday. im so excited to see what the result is. My frame is going to be white while the rest of the pieces are getting sprayed the same red as my tank.

Well I just got my Frame back and im completely extatic with the results!! I belive i made a mistake though...Iwas in such a rush to get it done that I didnt take into account that I may need to do a few frame mods :( Oh well I guess there are worse things. None the lest its awesome. Heres some pics...the bottom is sort of my inspiration. I really like the hidden oil tank and electric fittings. Im reserching some options. Ive thought of taking an old gas tank and cutting it to make a rear cowl/oil tank and using the same electrical set up that "The Archetect" used.

Yeah, that Wrench Monkey's bike has been inspiration for a lot of people. It is one slick looking ride.

I'm liking your paint. The white looks nice.

Looks good.  Who did your powder work?  I have used just about all the coaters in the Tacoma area and they start off good but then raise the $$ or the work starts to be sh*tty.

if you run a 78 cb750F front end you can swap on 1982 twin piston oem honda calipers.

i like the look of the "vintage" front end rather then the "modern"

Looking back....now that I have built a cafe.....I would go with a more stock setup, unless your shorter than 6 ft.

Modern forks look really cool, but from a performance standpoint, unless you are going to ride her flat out in the corners, a modified (re-sprung) stock front end is more than capable.  As far as brakes....well, you can never have enough of them, IMHO.

And contrary to what some will tell you, you can buy lower priced springs (front and rear) and still get the handling needed for a hot street bike.

I like the paint.  I just recently realized that's it not as easy as I thought.  For me, I like the look of a mod/stock CB750F.  I have already bought forks off a '01 GSXR 750 to make the conversion this winter.  That and a boxed/widened swing arm with modern rear shocks and brakes is all I need to do.

If Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha or someone made a naked/standard MODERN 750cc-900cc motorcycle, I'd buy that and be done.
Cheers!
and Ride Safe.

I used rainier powder coating. He has a small home built oven and works
out of auburn. I found him on craigslist. Craigslist says he's in sumner if you look it up. If you go in tell him Ahren (Aaron) sent you.

Yep.  Rainier was the last shop I used to.  Jeff does some good work for a real fair price.
