Just another newbie w/ a 550 cafe build.
« on: June 15, 2010, 10:20:03 PM »
So I have recently purchased a '77 CB550k3. It runs but it runs rough. Mechanically I have never worked on anything larger then my 150cc 2t scooter. First things first I ordered the carb kits and cleaned the carbs. I replaced the airbox w/ pods (reading all the posts concerning this beforehand) It has some 4-into-1 exhaust with the baffle taken out. Guess I need to replace the baffle. I put clubmans on while also putting on new throttle cables and a s.s. brake line. After adjusting valves and finding my cam adjuster damn near sheered off it was still running rough and the engine raced when I pulled the clutch, so I thought I had an air leak. Using starter fluid I found my head-gasket was bad. So I am about to take on a whole new monster by trying to change the head and base gaskets(If im not mistaken you should just go ahead and change both just in case...right?).  So thats pretty much it so far. This thread is pretty much for me to just chronicle this build but as always I would love any advice or encouragement.

Sharp looking bike you have there. You are correct, might as well do both while doing the one. I understand about the family ties etc.. That is why my build is not as documented as it should have been. Just do what you can.. GL with the build and the family.
