cb500 front rim options
« on: June 25, 2010, 11:58:14 PM »
I have a hop in my stock front rim.  What are my options for replacements?

Are there any oem 19" aluminum rims I can look for to relace to my stock hub?

My buddy said maybe something from a Goldwing?

Thanks.

There are plenty of them out there.  However, if the rim is still in good condition overall, then I'd suggest taking it to a machine shop to see if they can straighten it.  Many machine shops have the knowledge to pull it off (it isn't really very hard), and it will cost much less than a new rim.

I remember reading a 4WD article on which rims were the toughest.  The testers took the tires off each rim to be tested, and drove a fullsize truck offroad on some gnarly surfaces to see which rim held up the best.  Afterwards, they had the rims straightened at a local machine shop in southern California.  Total cost for straightening was less than $40 each.  That was just a few years ago, so I bet your rim shouldn't be more than $50 or so to straighten at a legit shop.

Check on eBay for dirt bike rims.  They come in 19" diameter pretty often, and are relatively cheap.  You can get a nice Excel rim for under $100 pretty easily.  I have seen debate over whether a road bike tire will fit a dirt bike wheel, and the consensus is that it will.

Another good option is to go to Buchannan spoke and wheel.  They have brand new alloy rims, although you will pay at least $180 per rim.  They have spokes kits too if needed.

I've also seen XS650 wheels that claim to have 19" stock alloy rims.  I can verify that the rears were alloy (for certain years), but am unsure of the fronts.  If the front is alloy, then that is another option to take since XS650 wheels are usually very cheap on eBay, and are quality name brand.

Thank guys, I'm checking into all that.

I really wanna stick with the spokes and stock hub though, no mag wheels.

Anything else?  Also maybe just a cheap steel alternative if not aluminum?

Most MX bikes for last 5~6 yrs have 19" alloy rear wheel.
They wont work for you though as you have 40 spoke hubs and they are either 36 or 32 hole.
You may find a Goldwing rim on eBay though.
550 hub is through drilled fitting dual disc is relatively easy and has been covered multiple times
If your re-spoking, I would go to WM3 rim.

I'm seeing a bunch of gl1000 front wheels on ebay.

Can I use the hub off these on my 72 cb500?  Or would I have to lace it to mine?

If it bolts straight in you got lucky.
If it doesn't, well you have a nice rim and probably a set of spokes
other than the labor, you still win

Yeah, Ill just order it and see what happens.

If it does bolt right on then it would be a pretty cool cheap upgrade for 500/550's.

Thanks.

Well that rim/hub has 40 spokes so that's good. So its only a matter of the dia of the axle that would keep you from using it.

Uuuhh............................................... No

axle diameter is always least of problems, it's easy to swap out bearings.
The width of hub is limiting factor, if it wont fit between fork legs its no go, machining usually isn't cost effective

Gotta buy this today.

Would this rim and hub work?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/77-HONDA-GL1000-GL-1000-GOLDWING-WHEEL-FRONT-RIM-8-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem563b342e06QQitemZ370360462854QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Yes.

While I have never put a GL wheel on a 550, I have used a 750 wheel on a 550 and the GL wheel on the 750.
From what I have learned about the 6 bolt front wheel, they all used the same hub (except for the early 750 Sandcast) and interchange easily with each other. Use your stock 500/550 brakes, axle, forks, bike, nuts and bolts, etc.

Hate to resurrect a month old thread, but was wondering how the GL1000 hub worked out on the 500/550?  Isn't the speedometer drive different?

Was there a trauma that caused your wheel hop? Did you own the bike when it did not have the hop? and then was there a trauma to the rim that caused it? If yes then proceed.

If not, well an aluminum rim is cool, but it may not cure the hop. Wheel hop can come from a tire, a sticky fork (springs, old oil, sticktion.) Maybe something in the rear even. All the suspension parts need to be in good order.

Just a thought.

I'm actually just getting around to doing some minor truing and media blast/paint to the wheel I bought.  I haven't checked the speedo drive, guess I should...

The front rim has a visible flat spot in it.  Although I guess I'm still not 100% that is the cause, it is at least part of it.

 Yes,
The GL speedo drive is different than the CB. Use the CB speedo drive with the CB forks (or GL speedo drive with the GL forks)
