Clutch bolts
« on: March 26, 2006, 02:29:50 PM »
Removed clutch cage on my 550 project to check and clean. Manual states to tighten to 26-32 ft lbs. Tightened equally until under spring tension. Put torque wrench on 1st bolt and it snaped like a pretzel. Removed plate and was able to turn the broken piece with my finger nail.  WTF?  Does the heat and tension stretch the bolts? Does anyone have a different tightening method?

That torque is WAY to high should be 7.2-10.1 Lbs Ft

Unclear in your post if it was the bolt, basket or plate that broke. If it was the basket, it  sounds like you did not have it lined up correctly before tightening.
I Broke my 1st one as well.
Here is the trick, once you get a new one if this was what happened.

Put all 4 bolts in a few threads.

grab the bolts and pull them  towards you wiggling until you feel the plate slip into the proper position. It will click in place.
Then while holding in place with bolts,  tighten until you have taken up the slack, then reef down on them.

If you don't have it in the right place,  you are leaving a space, and basket will break under the stress of tightening.

Hope this helps.........

The high torque setting is more likely for the centre nut holding the whole package in not the spring bolts. Like bryanj says, 10 libs max on those. Welcome to the not so exclusive club of clutch breakers, I'm a member in good standing too.

Yep add me to that club...twice.  I thought the torque specs related to the 4 outer bolts as well...now I know to just snug em with a normal rachet!

Thanks guys. I thought that seemed like a high torque setting, but needed to overcome spring pressure. For once, I learned a valuable lesson with 5 minutes inconvenience and no harm done!
