OK More parts on the way. Grabbed one of Carpy's Dresda arms and a 530 chain, some black oil lines, a red SS braided break line set from Slingshot Cycles, Still waiting on the PAmco Kit to arrive. Also picked up some new NGK Spark plugs. Just got another update on that Fork brace too..looks damn sweet!

In lieu of the fact that Carpy hasn;t got the 4 to 1's in yet (and may not fit with my current configuration) and since Cycle X's 4-2-1 (which likley will fit) is out of stock for a month... Anyone got a 4-1 header or exhaust set they are getting rid of?

If you live in the surrounding San Antonio/Austin/ Tx area..I may be willing to trade that '71 engine and frame I have laying around for a 4-1 and some parts or cash?

If you could buy it for $75 and shipping was 75, it would still be a decent deal. Comes w/2 mufflers, you could even sell one.

So here's the Brace TKAT made....Looks great. Perfect fit. Just what I needed. Thinking of getting it polished next week along with a few other parts.

Booter,

It was worth it twisting Tkats' arm :) I just put mine on as well. Now all I need it is some free time to go tide it!

Yeah that was a great idea. too bad that other swingarm isn't going to work out. I've been looking at some other parts to put on the bike. I'm afraid I'm falling into that "it'll never be finished blackhole" of constant upgrades.  gs1100 looks promising...  Guess I'll wait 'til next payday. Kinda broke right now. So that fender I'm sending you may have to wait a few more days. I'll bee shipping those kilo gauges with it too.

I have been in that "it'll never be finished black hole" for many years now, be careful.

and now I need to change my swing arm too :)

don't worry a bit about the fender or the gauges, it happens when it happens, no rush.

Now that one of my CBs has a GL1000 front end on it, I need a fork brace for that too....more arm twisting :)

let me know if you need anything to finish your bike, if I have it, you can have it.

Re: FREE BOOTER's CB750 K5-Swingarm update and bushings questions.
« Reply #289 on: April 10, 2012, 09:04:43 AM »
OK added an 80's cb650 swingarm to replace the stock one...

here's a size comparison w/ my friend's cb750 custom (which is essentially the same except for 1/2 extra width at the pivot.
It looks positively MONSTROUS compared to the stock one, but it looks great on the bike

Here it is on the initial test fit:

Side by side comparison:

(before) pic looks like the wheel is trying to shove itself up the bike's butt unlike the (after) pic which stretches it out..plenty of space.

It moved the shock mount back by 3" from eye to eye.
Unlike the 750F or Custom arms ...this one is an exact fit on the width. The only mounting issue stems from the fact it uses a slightly thicker (about 3/32" ) thicker pivot rod/bolt). I've read on other threads where they bored out the hole on the frame slightly bigger, but I am not about to drill a hole in mine (not yet anyway). I'd rather find a workable BUSHING that will fit in the 650 Arm and allow the use of my stock 750k bolt.

Here it is again (mocked up) with the oil tank and exhaust and my (finally) repaired front wheel (tube was flat).
The spare (chrome wheel) in the other pic had a much beefier tire on it than the black one so the black wheel removed some of the front Rake it had.

TONS more clearance now. Could fit a much bigger wheel tire combo if desired (but not now).

ugh! need opinions!!

Still trying to figure out what bushings to use or if I should just bite it and drill the frame (would rather not).

I HAVE decided if its bushings..then its gonna be Bronze all the way.

Also Stole this from :ucky's post (so Wi ll remember).
Sounds like sound decision making and since I'll be running a simlar set up it should work ...I'd already decided on the 120's based on other posts, but I hadn't thought of the # 45's...Thanks Lucky! (of course I will wait for Lucky to guinea pig this set up before I try it..LOL)

Sorry.... CB not VB

After much experimentation this is where I am now.

First I just richened up the idle jets.
Went from stock #35 to #38 then to #45's then back to #42's.
I thought part of the problem was the midrange controlled by the slide needle like some of the other Hondas I have worked on.
So I added shims to raise the needle. .058 thousandths shims with a #45mm idle jet worked really well but it was very rich- soot on the plugs.
Then I moved down on the shims on the needle to .037 thousandths and #42mm idle jet. Not as rich but ran horrible.
The mistake I made on that move was making two changes at one time.
So I was going BACK to putting the .058 shims under the needles again and then decided to STOP and remove all the shims under the needle and go back to the #45mm idle jet only. No shims.
I was reading an old article on CB750 Choppers and a guy suggested drilling out the #35mm idle jets to #45mm because ,in his words, "cure the annoying problem of the lean idle." So to me it seemed like all of this had been worked on before and now with the "cafe boom" happening again some of this information was forgotten. Many of the people that worked out all the problems are old now and may not even use the internet.

So I thought he does not mention anything about the mid range but I will just go back to the #45mm idle jets and just see what performance the bike has with no shims on the slide needle. But at least I know now the idle jet is a SOLID choice.(#45)
So  I started the bike with this set up:

velocity stacks with screens (Steel Dragon).OR Pods.
4 into 2 into 1 exhaust with baffle.
(4 into 1 with muffler would be about the same).
#120mm main jets.
Stock needles -no shims.
#45mm idle jets.
1 full turn open on the mixture screws.

It started and ran like a champ.
Good throttle response and no back firing.
So I am satisfied that the #45mm idle jet IS BETTER than the #42mm idle jet

I have put the carbs on and off at least 10 times or more.
I just will not accept the carbs being finished until it runs good.
I found out if you just put a pan under the bike and open all of the float bowl drain screws it is much faster than removing the carbs and then draining each float bowl.
I also installed all new mixture screws and O rings.
The new mixture screws have serrated thumb screws to make adjustments easier.

I actually managed to get mine apart (crescent wrenches and feet were applied to this task)..seems to have survived intact though. I keep meaning to send out that damn fender and gauges..I'm off tomorrow for the first time in 20 days...Will try to get them out. Working on Memorial Day too. (Why? Can you say "Double time and a half!?") Oh yeah .. I volunteered for that business. Its all about getting this thing on the road so I've been working OT like a madman.

Not sure if some one mentioned this already but the CB750 electrical system will not support those lights.  It will handle one H4 55/65W bulb but not 2 at the same time.  The guys that have run these lights have switched the bulbs to 2 - H4 35/35W or set up the lights so one is the low and the other is the hi beam.

Hmmm...I'd given that some thought previously, but hadn't really concentrated on what to do about it.  What about a Bus AC Ballast kit? Or something to significantly reduce the pull on the electrical system...I seem to remember there was a few different methods for making it work when I originally bought them. Guess we'll see. your option would probably be the cheapest way to go and I don't ride at night unless I HAVE to.

Pretty new on here but I came across your post.

I am thinking a HID solution might work for you.  It would cost a bit 80-100 and maybe another 5-10 to make a relay switched system for it, but your steady state draw should be about 35 or so watts per bulb.  I would imagine if you only strike one at a time and run heavy gauge wiring from the battery directly using a relay system with the handle bar switch it should be O.K. As you can reduce your wiring loses to almost zero.

Just a thought maybe run it by those more familiar with the bikes charging system.

Made a couple of minor cosmetic changes a while back. Just now putting up the pics. Bike has been on hold while I gather more parts and info for the electrical and still waiting on the exhaust (or deciding on one anyway).

So here's the new valve caps:

and the gators!! Just decided they made the front end a little beefier and more vintage/distinctive:

This isn't  a motorcucle obviously, but I have a case of ADD/OCD that makes it impossible for me to sit still and I constantly need a project to work on so I built this in between waiting on what to do with the CB750 and finding parts for my Jeep and building a new PC.

Kinda follows the color theme of the 750 ..LOL...What can I say? I like black and red and shiny bits.

Yep..new (quicky) paint job. Just hit it with white primer to see what it looked like. only did one side...

Opinions welcome.

I was originally going to go with no front fender, but as there is no white anywhere else on the bike I've decided a very small minimalist (chopped?) fender on the front painted black with a white tip and red lines might look good.

let me know what you think. I will be mocking up the fender tomorrow and see that it looks like.
