The Duke or Clint Eastwood?
« on: October 15, 2010, 10:09:02 AM »
Just some fun for a Friday afternoon...

So Clint is soon to release his latest movie as a director and is really getting along in years and The Duke has been planted in the ground for the last 31 years. So which one do you like best? And why? What is your favorite movie by either one?

Personally, my choice is #3 (Like 'Em Both). I grew up watching John Wayne movies with my dad. He had been a fan of the Duke since he was a little boy. But he was also a big fan of Clint's as well, and so was I.

My favorite John Wayne movie would be 1956's 'The Searchers'. Not only does the filming location (Monument Valley) make for a classic cowboy western but this is also the movie where Buddy Holly took his famous song title, "That'll be the Day" from. And who can forget the iconic ending with The Duke standing on the porch of the cabin, slowly turning his back to the camera as he walks off alone and the door closes, fading the scene to black?

As for Clint, my favorite would have to be, 1992's 'Unforgiven'.  He's a notorious killer that has hung up his guns, only to stumble awkwardly as a father and farmer. He then takes on one last 'job'. Eastwood's character stumbles through most of the movie seemingly unable to fight his way out of a paper bag. That is, until they kill his best friend and he reverts to the bottle. Then the vicious SOB that is Will Munny shines through at what he's best at.

Your answers don't have to be anywhere near as long winded as mine, just making up for a boring afternoon!! ;) ;D

I like Clint better. Not that I don't like the duke. I just admire Clint's talent as a directer even more.  I liked "the searcher" and I was asked to make a figure of him but declined. He did not have memorable outfit there( since the story spanned more than 5 years, his outfit changed quite bit) I offered to do "Flying Leatherneck" figure in stead, but they did not want it. By the way Cohen Bros are remaking "True Grit" with Jeff Bridges...
As for Clint's Western, "Unforgiven" was an awesome movie. Outlaw Josey is pretty high up on my list as well. He said "Gran Trino" was last movie as an actor, but I would like to see him on screen more.

Clint Eastwood,

It is hard to pick a favourite but the first one I ever saw was The Good the Bad and the Ugly, but I am pretty much a fan of all of his work. Other personal favourites are Thunderbolt and Lightfoot and Heartbreak Ridge.

Not to slag The Duke, just never a fan of his work.

though i'm a big fan of both, i'm gonna have to go with Clint.  They both represent what a man should be, but Clint is still representing (RIP the Duke) in an age where you can't step outside without slipping on someone's emotions they spilled all over the sidewalk.

Nicely put, that was why I liked Gran Torino

My sig line kinda gives it away, Searchers was a great western though, up there with Shane, Outlaw Josie Wales and The Wild Bunch.

I think on average the Duke was better at westerns.  Even though my fave western is Josy Whales. (along with Goin South)   Clint was better at the diff roles.

I gotta go with Clint.  Favorite movie may be the Unforgiven, but Million Dollar Baby was really good too.  Gran Torino, A Perfect World, Josey Wales, Escape from Alcatraz, and Mystic River were all good.

I wish "the Duke" would have lived long enough for him and Clint to do a movie together.

Isn't it funny how there names just fit them so well.
I mean how would there careers have gone if there names were, John Eastwood and Clint Wayne ???

I'm with Clint on this one. From the very beginning of his career, Rowdy Yates, he just kept getting better and better...and he's still at it. He has no problem stepping outside what his perceived Hollywood persona is though he really does shine in the role of the righteous stranger. Unforgiven was pretty much the result of all the westerns he's worked on and IMHO should be considered one of the best westerns of all time. There's a lot of depth to that movie...

As a director he has followed a similar path...better with every project. On the set he's a no nonsense guy who knows what he wants before the camera starts rolling...a rarity in Follywood. More often than not he gets it done with 1 take.

The Duke...He was a product of his time and he was good at it. He certainly had his film persona figured out and he worked it. It's not on many people's A list of Duke films but I've always considered "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" as one of his best movies. His scenes with James Coburn are priceless pieces of western film making.

I loved the Duke, but I think Clint outshines simply because of the wider range of characters. from the spaghetti westerns to Play Misty for Me, Honkytonk Man, Million Dollar baby, A Gathering of Eagles and Eiger Sanction, all the Dirty Harrys and so on...hard to pick a favorite but it might be Kelly's Heroes...that movie sorta made me a Donald Sutherland fan as well

Never really liked John Wayne.  His voice and the way he spoke was weird.  There was only one John Wayne movie that I liked, "The Conqueror" as Genghis Khan.

Lotsa Old Clint Eastwood movies on DVD in the $5 walmart bin like The Good, Bad and the Ugly.  It looks perty darn good too!

Have a lot of respect for The Duke, but his movies are quite dated now [some may say classic].

Clint has had an incredible career as both actor & director.
If you haven't seen "Gran Torino", rent it now, great movie!

So, Clint it is.

what about war wagon?
also, Hatari! was probably my fav non-western he did. I saw that movie probably 20+ times before i turned 10.  The Longest Day is definitely a favorite but he was more of a co-star for that.
