I know I'm posting things out of order but...


The valve in focus is the one that started this whole process. Notice the marred edged of the valve stem. It was struck by the rocker arm a few times after the screw had backed out.


Valve cover removed.


Top end removed.

Alright so... since I have to have the cyl bored... I might as well go big.

I'm looking into putting together an 836 setup. Anyone have any opinions on any of the available kits?

At the moment I'm thinking the Ape kit looks pretty attractive but ideally I would really like a .360" lift with a longer duration (maybe 280º).

Of course all the necessary other upgrades will have to occur: bearings, cam chain, primary chain, ss valves and hd springs, etc...

I'm seriously considering having my head ported but I'm just not sure if I can afford it. I know it's the best bang for your buck but that's just a lotta bucks I gotta bang.

Was there not a cheap 836 kit available from somewhere in Asia I think.  Terry has the info I am sure.  He picked up a kit or two I think.

So you have to bore it out and shave the heads huh.. Yep sounds like big bore kit and a little higher compression to me... add in a hot cam and you got a screamer not a dud.

I've decided that my goal for this bike is something that I can drive every day and will drop jaws (and cover ears) everywhere it goes. But I'd also like to impress some people at the track occasionally.

So I just sat down and priced out a few things...

Besides the potentially lethal amount of money I'm about to spend on my head, I need...
  • 836cc piston kit & cylinders bored out
  • hot cam
  • cam chain + tensioners and rollers
  • primary chains + primary chain tensioner
  • lightened and balanced crank
  • heavy duty rods (carrillos would be SOOOO nice)
  • heavy duty cylinder studs
  • clutch kit
  • gasket set
  • undercut, glass bead, and polish gear faces
and there’s more I’m probably forgetting…
OH and let’s not forget the all important mirrored Honda wings tattoo I’ll be getting on my back after all this is done, haha.

I've already ordered some K2 rocker arm shafts to replace my (perfectly fine) K7s now I'm wondering if I'll need new rocker arms too?

One last thing... I need someone with a steady hand to do some engraving on the motor... I'm going to grind off the 736cc and replace it with 836 when all is said and done.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH you said the magic word. (bokeh)

It's the 1.4 I'm sure. I do have the 1.8 though. Actually... I have a few lenses and I'm even getting rid of a few to help to afford this project.

Man I loooved that 12-24mm on my D80, I sold mine too though as I didn't use it much and moved to a full frame rig. Very cool.

updates.

So it looks like my dream motor is a little bit out of my price range at the moment.
Instead of half-assing it, I'm just going to set it aside and build it right when I have the money.


In the meantime I need a bike to ride, lucky for me I have this old basket case.




The plan is to pull the motor on this K2 and check it over. If it looks capable, then I'll throw it on the K7.
While I (hopefully) ride the K7 powered by the K2 motor, I'll be building the K2 project.

The K2 is going to require a lot of work all over to get it in running condition. It had been sitting for a couple years and doesn't look as if it's led the most comfortable life up till this point.


As you can see my garage is a disaster.
This is the result of working on multiple projects at the same time.

Forks from the K2 and other parts bike disassembled.



I'll be parting a TON of stuff out over the next few weeks. From both bikes and a 3rd parts bike I have, plus other parts I've amassed.

HOly Sh!1 wow...better to find out THIS way than on the road...

Excellent excuse to buy a new triple! Something awesome and aftermarket...for "safety"reasons of course. It must be justified somehow.

yea... apparently the PO didn't realize there was supposed to be a spacer/washer in there between the two ends and just tightened down too hard. When I went to remove it that happened.

yea i wouldn't be surprised to find one or the other... what got me was having BOTH. ATF in one and fork oil in the other haha.

Just bought a bunch of paint stripper, phosporic acid, a respirator and a bunch of other fun stuff.

Today is teardown, next weekend is paint removal and disassembly of my buddy's xs650.

I was hoping to remove the K2's motor to inspect it for usability but got this instead.
That's the spark advancer shaft and the threads snapped off WAY too easily.

At the moment I don't really need them. The forks are pretty much only useful for parts so I don't even have any sort of front suspension.
I'm not so worried about the K2 at the moment, and the K7 has a good front end.

I'm probably just going to sue the K2 as a template for fitting some modern front forks.
If I wind up messing that up and need some trees I'll let you know.
