Electrical - flasher relay question
« on: October 18, 2010, 11:25:31 PM »
The 1976 cb550 I just got has had the fuses changed over to modern style (the ones that are more stone henge looking instead of the old glass/metal capped tubes.  Does this mess it up somehow.  Headlight works except high beam, flashers turn on but don't flash, because...

In the process, for a reason that baffles me, he had the relay removed - or it blew and he never replaced it.

I am wondering if it's possible to get a cheaper after market flasher relay for this bike.  Is there something at an auto parts store that would work?

Thanks.

www.outwestmotorcycles.com  $ 7.75  manufactured by Emgo.  I got one for a CB 400 F,  and works fine.

Seems they don't have one for the 550k.  Shot them an email, maybe they don't have it listed on their site.

yes.
Any auto parts store will have electronic flasher relays that will work for less than $10.

Thanks so much.  I was hoping that would be the case.  Do you know if there is a doc that will tell me the exact values I need?  I have looked though the parts list I have, but it doesn't seem to show that info (or my eyes are too bad to read the miniature version I have :)

Bike Bandit fiche doesn't have values on there either.

For my 350F, i just picked up a $8 3-pin 12v electronic relay at autozone. works fine.
i think yours might be 2-pin.  not sure.
check if you have black, white and a green wire.
might be w/o green (ground)

i just bought a "heavy duty" electronic flasher. red cylindrical shaped sucker. if i remember right its a direct replacement for old chevys. i was even able to squeeze it into the rubber mount for the old rectangular one. mine has 3 prongs (only used 2 though) but im pretty sure there is a 2 prong version... i can get you a pic in a couple hours if you need it.

I will check the bike and report back - but I am pretty sure that I only have 2 wires.

I'm fairly sure you will have a green wire with a female spade connector hanging loose near the flasher. Using a 3 terminal flasher will let you use LED signal lamps without further trouble.

This is a photo of the 2 ends that are hanging there, lonely.

I don't see a green/ground wire hanging. Will this still work with a regular auto store bought relay???

I'll have to check some of the other auto joints. That place is nowhere to be found in NYC.

Thanks for the link though. It'll help me find what I'm looking for.

Thanks for the visual. Quick (dumb) question. Is it apparent which wire goes to what?  It looks on mine (as well as your photo) that tere is black wrap around the wire itself before the tip/end.

I didn't dig it out of there, and I'm not in front of it. Maybe it will be obvious when I'm there with it???

I don't if any of you know, but the state of auto parts stores in NYC is amazingly bad!

I just checked 2 of the 3 chains, no luck for relay. Finally spoke to a guy at Strauss Auto, and he said they have several. Trying to get specifics failed.  I will be shocked if they ended up being the right type.

Wish me luck.

Nort

If you are asking 'em for a "relay" you may be confusing 'em. Too many of these new parts guys know little or nothing about parts. Say "Electronic Turn Signal FLASHER" and they'll get it.

If yours is a 2-wire, get a 2-wire. They also have the 3-wire "Flashers" too for bikes with 3 wires (like mine).

It's plug & play. The Electronic Flasher flashes with all incandescents, all LED's or a combination of both types - at the same interval.

Thanks. I definitely said both those terms, but honestly, his confidence was causing my doubt :)

I will just go in myself and look around. Looking like I may need to go online after my visit to the store tomw.

I'm surprised that none of the online bike shops have cheaper ones.

I'd recommend Z1 Enterprises, and maybe order a few things together to make it worth the shipping cost if money is tight.

You're welcome. Actually, Z1 has pretty reasonable rates if I recall and their customer service is awesome. Can't go wrong with them. Their reviews speak for themselves.

Jus checked out the site. They are definitely reasonable. The have at least 2 things I could use right now. Of course, the shipping will probably STILL be more than the items. If only they could be based in Brooklyn!
