how do you get a cb750 seat open without keys???
« on: October 30, 2010, 04:40:13 AM »
I am purchasing a 1975 cb750f today and it doesn't have keys.  The owner is deceased and the title and keys went missing I'm think there is a possibility that the title may be under the seat(wishful thinking).  I was wondering if there is an easy way to get the seat up without ruining anything?????

Just went out to look at mine don't see any way to do it. A lock smith is your best bet when he gets it open then get him to make a key. Yours may be defferent mine is a 750K8.

Locksmith unless you want to drill out the lock and use a screwdriver.

Not sure if the F is the same as the K model, but the older K models had a number stamped into the tumbler cover. A honda dealer could supply keys if they had that number. I read somewhere once that bikes when new, were supplied with 3 keys. Two for the owner and one for the dealer to keep. Some shops had a big jar full of keys, and could supply keys because there was a relatively small number of ignition tumblers made for all Hondas of the period. I bought keys for my K5 a few years ago, (fairly recently). They were proud of 'em
tho, at 10.00 each...Hope your F model is similar in that regard, and assume the seat takes the same as the ignition lock..Good luck with it.

My K0 seat doesn't lock but if yours is similarly constructed, you can take the 2 pins out of the opposite side with needle-nosed pliers and maybe lift that side.

Yes that is true, the seat is held in with two pins secured with cotter pins. You pull the cotter pins ad tap out the hinge pins and open the seat. I did this while I was waiting for my keys to come in.

You're going to need a key for the igntion also. My first attempt would be to pull the ignition switch and get the number stamped on it. For instance, mine is 79xxx. The ignition should match the seat. One of us may have a key you could use or you could check with HondaKeys.com and see if he has a key. Good luck. I'm hoping the title is under the seat. That would make things MUCH easier for you.

Update: I meant to post this link. He may be a good resource too.

There is a seller on ebay that sells keys for our bikes.  Take the numbers off the seat/handlebar/or ignition lock and he will mail you the proper keys.  Thats how I got a new key for mine.  Fast and easy.

Thanks for all the advise!!! I think I will try hondakeys.com, I just hate to wait for things...But I have allot of work before I need a key anyway like cleaning the carbs and such..It was quite a barn find, its been sitting since 1992. The guy gave me a old registration card and he will be sending me a copy of a death certificate I am hoping that's all I need to get a title if its not under the seat.....

DO a search there was a member here here who is a locksmith and was wiling to make keys. You can also pull the lock cylinder by removing the two bolts at the bottom. The cylinder separates from the switch and you can turn it manually so you can sort out the electrics and whatever tuning you need to do.

This guy will have your key.  Just match up the number on the ignition to one he has.  Instant key for you.

I have pulled the pins, then removed the bolts on the catch on the latch side from under the seat. It takes some time
