New member from the Pacific NorthWet (Bothell, WA)

Hi, I'm HalfFast and I'm a bike-a-holic   ;D

I've been lurking on the site for a couple of weeks.  Some very cool bikes / projects on here!  I'm inspired by the level of determination and ingenuity the members display.  Very humbling!

While new to the forum I'm not new to bikes.  I've devoted much of my riding over the years to dirt (enduro) and dirt / street (Adventure) riding.  I've been a regular attendee of the Backfire in Seattle and have always been attracted to the Cafe style bikes.  My desire for a Cafe bike increased after I traded an older BMW Adventure bike for a Ducati Monster, that Monster is a blast to ride and loves to go fast   ;D

Though I love the throaty rumble of my Duc, the piercing wail of the CB400F has a special place in my heart.  I fell in love with the little CB while in HS during the mid-70's.  I started looking to buy a 400F early last summer but the bike I found available in the Seattle area were either junk and therefore more work / money or too nice to make into a Cafe bike.  On Friday I finally found what a I believe is the perfect candidate for the bike I envision.  The bike doesn't run at the moment so I could very well have purchased a nightmare but I'd like to believe the POs story that the bike is a runner that was worked on by a mechanic to rebuild the carb and give it a tune up but they ran out of money and couldn't justify investing more into the bike.  Hopefully this so called mechanic didn't do any thing too terrible to the carbs.

Anyway, here's my $500 project bike:

She's what I call a 20 footer.  Looks good from a distance but the closer ya get the more you can see that she is in need of some love.

The exhaust actually made me giggle!  Now days people would call it ghetto but I can remember back in the 70's it was hard to find pipe the same size as that used on small displacement Honda's and it just happens to be that vaccuum cleaner pipe was the right size and chrome to boot ;D

Seeing that vaccumm cleaner pipe extention on the exhaust definitely brought back memories   ;D

I'm still in research mode so I'm not sure exactly what parts I'll use but I'm leaning towards a bike that is a mix of old and new tech.  I sent payment to Hondaman for his Transistor Ingnition upgrade - this upgrade is the best of both worlds and truly a no-brainer, can't imagine anyone not wanting to do this upgrade!

One area that I plan to make changes is the brakes.  Larger diameter front rotor with multi piston caliper is a must in my book.  Dual disc in the front would be nice.  I also plan to have a rear disc brake.

As for wheels I love the look of spoke rims but keeping the spoke rim look takes a back seat to the brakes.  I definitely want 4:1 exhaust.  I've found the OEM pipe on ebay and another by MAC but that's it for the 400F.  Like the looks of the Yoshi pipes but if it was ever made for a 400F I have yet to find evidence on the web.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself.

Cheers

Hey DB22, welcome, I too have been checking out these pages before joining recently.   Seems like you did well getting that $500 special & the piping is hilarious!  Must be a little noisey too.  I like your tip on the electronic ignition, don't have any issues with my old points, but it would seem to be a solid upgrade like you said.  Cheers & enjoy the winter doing those upgrades.  Don't forget to post the results too.

Sweet another NorthWetter! I am a forum newb myself. This place rocks. You will find out all you need to know and then some and definately learn of some upgrades you just HAVE to have. This forum makes me spend money! Great group of people here. You should start a build thread in the projects section so we can follow your progress. Welcome!

Brooze72 / BWJ - Thanks for the welcome!

I will definitely post up in the projects section. Just a little more research to be done and then I'll have something worth posting.

As for the Hondaman Transitor Ignition the cool part is that you get to keep the points & condensor of the OEM setup, it simply installs in between the condensor and the coil eliminating the high current that passes through the points which extends the life of the points significantly and the best part is if the Hondaman part fails you simply unplug it and you've got your OEM ignition system as a backup!  Very cool in my book!

Welcome to the forum Brad.  Always good to see new guys from the PNW pop up on here.  I still have not made it to Backfire but it is on my list of must do's.  I love the 400f's and it looks like yours is pretty much all there.

Thanks tweakin!  Is there a Backfire equivelent monthly event down in Tacoma?  If yes I would certainly be up for riding down to check it out - provided it wasn't the same day as the Backfire   ;)

Also, it would be great if we could organize some SOHC4 rides.  I typically ride 'round Rainier every summer but missed it this year.  Would be very cool to get a bunch of us to gether and ride Rainier of St Helens   ;D

Welcome to the boards Brad. I'm local as well. Located in the Kirkland/Juanita neighborhood. I've been known to frequent Backfire as well. Great event and something to look forward to every month.

If you haven't already... you should check out www.400fourstore.com. Kevin's a great chap and he's located right here in our own back yard. When I needed a new main wiring harness for my '75 400/4, I simply aranged a meet up, drove the 15 mins to his shop and saved myself the shipping cost.  ;D

Cheers,
Chris

Chris, thanks for the welcome and thx for the heads up on the local shop!  If you ride your bike to the Backfire I probably have a picture of it   ;D  Look forward to a formal introduction to you and your bike!

BoCoJohn, not sure yet on the exact direction I'll go on the bike but once I'm done I'll most likely sell off any unused items.

Cheers

No backfire in Tacoma, I just hope to make it up to Seattle to one.  I second Tom8Toe that Kevin at 400four store is top notch.

I would love to get a group to ride Rainier next year.  In my other life I ride a harley and would love to ride with a vintage focused group on my 750.

Thanks tweakin!  Is there a Backfire equivelent monthly event down in Tacoma?  If yes I would certainly be up for riding down to check it out - provided it wasn't the same day as the Backfire   ;)

Welcome to the forum. I love my 400. +1 on the 400fourstore, Kevin is great and has tons of info and parts for 400's.

The forks on the cb550's are more stable and you can run double disk up front with them. I'm not sure what's involved with getting the triples to bolt up but it's been done and the info is here on the site somewhere.

There was Yoshi pipe available but it's discontinued. I have a stock header if you're interested.

I'm down for a SOHC ride sometime too.

Rat400F, thanks for the great - I'm hearing great things about Kevin, look forward to doing business with him.  Thanks for the tip on the cb550 front end, I'll do some investigation to see if that's the path I want to follow.

Sorry to hear about the Yoshi pipe no longer being available but I've read some good reports on the MAC exhaust and will probably end up with one on my bike.

As for the ride I looked for an Events area on the site to start a planning thread but haven't found one yet but we have all winter to get something planned.

Cheers
