Speedo needle jumping
« on: November 03, 2010, 09:47:09 PM »
I've noticed that the needle on my speedo has been bouncing around a lot lately. It seems like it does it more at higher speeds and when its cold. When I ride home in the afternoon and its about 60f it doesn't seem to jump around as much.

Is this normal or is there something I should look at to keep the needle steady?

Try disconnecting it from the speedo and dripping in some oil down the tube.
Others will come along shortly and tell you where to buy the (special tool) to do the job, but 5 mins dripping some oil in it will make you happy ;)

Ass stats ;D

Oh I'll give that a go too Seaweb, mine thinks it's a friggen gieger counter!
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I believe the cable moves freely in the sheath (at least on the 650) so the lubing tool probably isn't needed. Just disconnect at the speedo and insert some graphite cable lube.  Also, check the cable connection at the wheel hub and make sure the screw holding the cable in has not worked its way loose. Regardless, back out the screw and pull the cable out and see if it is well-lubed and in good shape. Make sure you push the cable all the way back in before re-tightening the screw; The "rib" in the cable end should disappear into the hub housing.  It's a piece of cake.

And as far as the lube goes, find some Dri-Slide.  It has Molybdenum, so when the liquid carrier evaporates, it leaves the Moly, which is a tad better than graphite as dry lubes are concerned.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Awesome! I'll give that a go. I just assumed that it was "personality" and something I was going to have to live with. Guessing my speed was fun! :P
