GINORMOUS Cam?
« on: November 16, 2010, 04:17:32 PM »
Hey guys,

Last question of the day, I promise! So my basket engine came with a cam that was much too big for it (most would be considering the stock springs and retainers it came with). I suspect this, as there seems to have been some valve/piston facetime involved at somepoint in the past. I've got new cycle X valves lined up to replace the old ones, and the cyclex springs/alloy retainers, but it's the cam that makes me scratch my noggin.

It's marked:
CWC - J-8
D2 C2
K134

and on the tach side it's marked K/H SF. Cam is MASSIVE and lumpy as hell (compared to my F2 cam and my stock K3 cam), and has a very fat D profile. Searching has yielded that it's a Kenny Harmon cam, and I was looking on Satanic Mechanic but have no idea if it's a Super F cam or not. Any ideas?!

Any help would be much appreciated, and my apologies for asking so many questions!

Not sure but the K/H and SF on the end of the cam would lead me to believe it is a Kenny Harmon Super F cam.

That's what I thought too.

http://www.satanicmechanic.org/kharmoncam.shtml

Going from Satanic mechanic, and cross referencing to other makers that the super f is a veritable monster. I plan to street ride this bike, and maybe a few track days, but do NOT have the cash for Carrillos. Keeping that in mind and the big bore kit is it even worth running this cam?

I'm just baffled that the engine was run with this (if it is a Super F cam). Engine had a stock port, stock valves, stock springs, stock carbs. I have a set of calipers with me here, so if anyone needs some measurements I can take them?

you actually want the engine to idle and be street tractable aswell, wild cams are hard work on a normal ride

It should work on the street as long as you run stiffer springs..

Not the best for parades maybe..

Would this setup be okay?

Cyclex springs/alloy retainers:

Cyclex superflow valves:

F2 carbs

Stock bottom end (F2 bolts of course, but stock rods) + 836 10.25:1 compression + APE head studs?

I have all of these parts, I just don't want to overpower the bottom end, or end up having the bike run like crap just because it's the cam I have on hand. I have an F2 cam otherwise I could run, or I could sell/swap this cam if you guys think I shouldn't run it. Would the bike idle okay, and would I make power without pushing the bottom end too far?

If you really dont want to run it, I would trade for a new stock cam.. Are you in Canada ?

It's not that I don't want to run it, I'm just paranoid (because I'm not upgrading rods) that one of my rods is not going to be happy and buckle, or just peace right out  :o I'd love to eventually build this engine up, but considering this whole project was a basket case, I'd rather put the engine together and see how it runs, then go back and start replacing the big money items. I do have a several stock K cams and an F2 cam to run if this doesn't work out, but at the same time I'd hate to loose performance just because I'm intimidated by a big cam  :P

I am in fact in canada, school in vancouver, work in winnipeg.

There is 2 836's in town here with cams, springs, stock rods, that have made  at least 500 runs at the strip, and stayed together.. yours could too, No guarantees, but it has been done a lot..

What do you have to lose.. ???, used motors are 100-150 bux. If you can afford good rods run em..if not, stick to small 836 motors..

I have been running the K & H... F grind cam with stock rods for years .I did do the valve springs and had to mess quite a bit with jetting but once you get it you will love it .Its not a good cam to be stuck in traffic with but i tell you at idle it has an amazing sound and the throttle responce when riding is awesome ...dont be scared of it ... That is one hell of a lump stick ;D , if I had one of those for my 650 it would be installed before I even thought about it.
