1978 750K: Front Brake Caliper Rebuild Kit
« on: December 09, 2010, 08:58:56 PM »
I hate to do this, but for the past three hours I've searched forums, the Brake FAQ, crc2, bikebandit, partsnmore, davidsilverspares, oldbikebarn, cb750supply, z1 enterprises, eBay and the google machine.  I can't find a #$%^ing rebuild kit for my K8's front caliper. ???  There are plenty out there for '78 Fs, but I understand their pistons/seals are larger than the Ks.

Anyone know where to find a rebuild kit?  My bike, wife and kids all thank you for your insight, because I'm getting grumpy. ;)

Thanks, Mick!  I may have to go that route (buy the parts individually).  I was hoping for a rebuild kit, but that may not be possible.

If its leaking there is just the one rectangular ORing. Otherwise its just disassemble clean and reassemble. If you're careful you can use the ORing over. You don't replace the piston unless there is something wrong with it. Its pretty expensive and you wouldn't buy it on a whim.  So, no kit.

Hey theofam,  I just rebuilt my k8 caliper.  Mine was dragging and not retracting even after a a few cleans.  I got the seal from http://www.partspitstop.com/ .   They have decent prices on OEM stuff and have been a pleasure to use so far.  Only thing they have going against them is shipping so it helps to save up and buy a few things at once.

For the caliper, take out the old o-ring and really clean the nooks and crannies, i used a pick and was amazed at the crap that came out.  After it was nice and clean i put the new o-ring in, lubed it with a little Dow Corning High vacuum grease (apparently the only kind to use) and put the piston back in.

The thing has been working smooth ever since.  No dragging and no constant squealing.

Thanks mcrider.

Knowsnothing, I appreciate the tip on partspitstop. I've never heard of that site. Also, good info on the high vacuum grease. Guess it's time to tear it apart!

+1 on the re-use of the o-ring. Carefully clean it and replace it. The groove must be cleaned well as stated earlier. And the advice on the piston is good too. Unless its pitted and nasty it will work again. Also remember to take apart the swing arm for the brake and lube the hinge. They get stiff and cause issues too.

I got my replacement O-ring and the bleeder screw (mine was chewed up by the PO) from Honda. No problem, inexpensive. Had to be ordered, but came in the next day.

Cookindaddy, good to hear the parts are quickly available.

Fasturd, thanks for the heads up on lubing the hinge, too.  What have you been up to?  After 13 turned out so schweet, I figured you'd turned your talents onto another project.
