CB550 Front wheel bearing "retainer"
« on: December 15, 2010, 04:24:48 PM »
So i replaced the bearings in the front wheel on the bike, the PO had staked the retainer in 4 places so i had to cut the old retainer out with a chisel. The problem now it that the staked area on the hub is still sticking out, also i don't really have any kind of specialty tools. The manual calls for a 07910-3230100 wrench but as far as i can tell the thing isn't made anymore.

Any recomendations on what or where to get thh tool for this thing? What should I do about the staked area that is holding up the new retainer?

I'm down for a week and a half on this now, i hate not riding every day.

To clean up the threads, use a 1.25 (or is it 1.5??) pitch tap as a thread file.  I got a pin spanner (see link below) that helps a great deal with these retainer rings.

Next time, drill out the stakes, a little PB Blaster and use the pin spanner.  You'll have clean threads and a reusable retainer ring!

EDIT: oh, and here is a GREAT tutorial on bearing replacement.  It shows how to build a retainer wrench and a bearing get 'er out 'er tool also.

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

What Old School said.  The factory staked those and SOP is to drill them out and the retainer should come out and go back in fairly easily. Then you stake it again.

Drill using a bit slightly larger than the hole of the stake, and go down about 3/16 inch. That will release the stake.

Another tool idea I stole from someone here is to use a piece of flat steel or aluminum stock, 1" wide, 24" long or so, and probably 1/8 in thick.  Drill two holes in it, midway, spaced the same as two of the slots on the retainer that are 180deg apart. Insert a short bolt in each hole, secure it with a nut. A little bit of each bolt extends past the nut, enough to engage the retainer. With that much leverage things turn pretty easily, for about $1.50 in parts.

The third hole is to fit another size retainer.

Another idea is cutting a piece of metal just long enough to fit across the retainer in the grooves then put monkey wrenches or vice grips on each end for leverage...not my idea, taken from my hondaman book, worked great for when i pulled mine. Good luck!
