spraying engine parts. what paint?
« on: January 15, 2011, 08:36:28 AM »
i have had my head, cylinder & rocker (valve cover) blasted.

i bought some simonize engine enamel silver spray which says it will stand up to 300 deg C heat when cured. (i will bake the engine parts in the oven when my wife is not around)
have already been in trouble as i primed the side panels & hung them on bungees to dry in the house overnight. i like the smell of fresh paint but she doesn't.

will this be ok for my cylinder temperatures???

those chemicals will stay in your oven.  They are carcinogenic.

Duplicolor's engine paints, which they say are good to 500 F. do not require a heat cure according to their directions.

used duplicolor sprayed in garage, then in house oven to bake, smell wasn't too bad at all, then when done, put oven onto self clean cycle which turns oven dirt to grey ash, that should take care of chemicals

You might think about getting them powdercoated instead of paint. Far more durable and will tolerate any temperature your engine will reach . . . unless (maybe) it's about to overheat and seize,at which point whatever you've chosen is the least of your problems.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

Talk with the local powder jockey and ask him to show you the color pallets.  They should have a fantastic match for your requirements.

those chemicals will stay in your oven.  They are carcinogenic.

please dont put anything in your home oven. I went garage sale surfing and got myself a toaster oven for 5 bucks, cut the sides off and bolted some taller sheet metal on. worked great for baking small parts. but if your painting an engine parts they will dry over time with the bike running. however they will never "cure" even after baking as 2 part paint does.

post some pics when your done
