Fat wheel and the Center Stand
« on: March 26, 2006, 02:02:45 PM »
Sounds like a great sitcom, however I do have a question for you guru's.  I have done the rear wheel "Harley" conversion and placed a 190/50 15 on the ass end.  I love the look, a lot, and will not consider going back to stock, but now I am face with a dilemma.  I cannot get the bike on the center stand as it is jut not wide enough to straddle the rubber.  Has anyone found a way to make a fat rear wheel and a center stand work on these bikes.  Is there another stand I could fit to my machine?  By the by it is a 1977K.

Thanks

                Hey chundy,

I don't have the answer to your question but, I gotta tell you that
that is one good looking 750. There are probably others waiting for the answer
                  as well. Later on, Bill

Thanks Bill, always nice to hear.  Have put a lot of sweat and blood into her.  Tintin, another sohc member has actually helped me out more then a little.  We have spent more then a few hours in my garage tweaking things.

chundy & tintin,

In my opinion, it was well worth it. Hope you get a feasible answer to your
problem. After seeing and hearing so much on the 16" wheel w/a wide tire, I'm getting the
itch to do it on one of my projects and I want to retain the center stand too.

So you laced your Honda hub to a 15'' wheel rather than a 16'' huh ?
Intresting.. ;D
Lets see some rear pics of this fat tire CB....

How would the small-diameter, very wide tire affect handling?

From my past experiences with wide tire bikes, the wider the rear tire, the harder it is to turn / handle the scoot.
This is how I used to put it to customers.
Imagine a 2x4 is on the ground in front of you. The wider that 2x4 is, the harder it
will be to pick up off the floor from one end. This is the same as going from a bike with a 180mm tire on it to one with a 300mm.

I doubt going from a stock sized CB rear tire to anything under a 200mm will make that big of a change in handling..

Handles just fine, my bigger issue the honkin fat exhaust, cornering hard has caused the tips to drag a few times.  Scares the #$%*e out of me every time.  doesn't matter how fat the rubber is when it's not on the pavement.  I have had no handling issues with this bike, however it is a daily rider for me.  Not a slalom/track bike, by any stretch.

Great looking bike.

Don't you have a problem with clearance on the torsion arm that runs to brake hub?

I have a 16 Harley rim on my CB 550. My tire is not near as wide as yours and mine is very close.

Give up the stand... Who needs it? Take it off. Saves weight, Looks a whole lot better. Store it in the garage and you can just
slide in the pins and bounce it up when you need to do maint.

Torsion bar was a wee issue.  Had to add quite a few spacers to get the proper clearance.  I am in fact about a quarter inch away from the torsion bar and the swing arm.  I did however run into a funny yet idiotic problem.  I moved from a Conti rear to a Maxxis last season.  The maxxis does have quite a bit more meat to it.  Went for a cruise and noticed that I was shredding one side of the tire.  I though that it was rubbing on the swing arm or the brake torsion bar, however after much dicking around I noticed that the rear lights I was using at the time had a long post on them that ran into the wheel well (damn cheap EMGO #$%*).  So the issue was when my fat arse got on the seat, and cornered a little hard I was driving the light post right into the rear rubber.  I'm such a tool.  I have ordered up so progressive rears due this week, after realizing just how much the current old ass suspension must be diving down.  I will post up some close ups of the rear tomorow.
