Motorcycle rental in Italy
« on: January 28, 2011, 01:16:49 PM »
Hi all,

Not sure how many of you are from Italy... For those of you who are, or have experience over here, I am studying abroad this semester in Rome, and was thinking about potentially renting a bike for a weekend and cruising through the countryside a bit.  Any suggestions on places to rent?  Also general suggestions on what to check out while I'm over here is appreciated!

I have not done it but when my wife and I went there just over a year ago, we looked into renting a car.  A travel agent we spoke to here said to beware of the insurance you get.  There are several levels and if you do not get complete coverage you can be liable for ridiculous sums for a small fender bender.  I would research it thoroughly before you do it.

By the way, that is how I would love to see all of Italy, on a bike.

I know this will not suit everyone but sometimes its better, if you have friends there,  to buy a bargain bike and ride it for the trip then sell it or have your friends sell it when you leave, if you get a good deal you can get out of it reasonably cheap. This is not for everyone though..

I had thought about buying one and reselling it, however I don't have friends that stay over here... and so its a big risk for me. Also my Italian is pretty poor, I probably would not do well trying to sell it.  I REALLY would like to ride, even if its just for a couple days.

I've been to Italy 3 times, it is incredible! [I'm biased and Italian]. The wine, the food, the women, not necessarily in that order.
I have rented vehicles but not bikes. Don't ride in Roma, they are crazy! I got sideswiped by a moped!
I highly suggest the Amalfi Coast if you get that far South.
Let us know how it goes.
