Winter Projects

Now that Winter is creeping up on us Northerners, it's time to think of what kind of plans are in the works for the group.
I'm planning on doing more Resto stuff on my '77. New paint for the tank and side covers, a few hundred hours of polishing, etc.
also, to start searching for a new project bike

I'll be restoring three bikes as a goal for this winter.  That would include my 1971 CB500K0 SOHC-4, my 1967 CB77 305 Superhawk and my 1965 CA77 305 Dream.

I would also hope to get one of my CB 500Ts running well, and sold so I can make some space.

I'm going to restore this old 72 CL350 for the wife.
I've been buying parts on Ebay now for months getting ready. 2nd restoration, not nearly as nervous as the 1st time.

We need more than one vote on this.

My Summer project has turned into my Winter project.  I bought a '76 550K last April and then promptly ran out of money.  I finally got all the parts in and just started working on it.  Complete tear-down, repaint, rebuild, and the wheels are in the shop getting all new rubber bits and getting trued.  Thinking about doing a mild cafe with clubmans and a quarter fairing that I had on the 750 for a while, but didn't like them for longer rides.

Hopefully finish the F3 ( at 95% done right now), the Candy Gold K2 ( about 60% done), do the Orange K4 (engine done), and maybe the Brier Brown K2 ( not even started). Ambitious??? Yes - but we'll see.

Winters coming, and the snow flew here today, so I'm contributing to this thread. This winter I hope to...

get all the bits I have accumulated for the Norton installed, so I can actually ride it next year.

start putting the CB175 back together.

New bars on the CB650; new front brake handlebar gubbins; new mufflers from MIVV, if I can afford it.

For the first time in my life I have a heated garage, so I really have no excuse to not get cracking. Unless, of course, I have a job 1000km away from home, like now!

So many things to do and so little time!

Finish installing the engine in the 550 and get the fall rides in.

Get the wiring/electrics on the 750F sorted including horn and turn signals, rebuild all the calipers and possibly replace brake lines, drain and replace fork oil, pull the head and put the new one on with the proper cam (PO installed a K cam when it broke down - couldn't wait for delivery), Dyna S ignition and tune, new back tire and should be ready to go.

Rebuild the engine I messed up - 550K. Heading into uncharted territory on this one.

Get the ugly seized 75 CB550 from my friend that is sitting in the corner of his garage and put another 550 engine I have into it. I'd like to make a bit of a Cafe for my son to play on; or me.

If I get the 72 BSA at the end of the month, go screaming nuts and forget about a life.

My wife mentioned something about house painting last night. When does she think I'll have time?
Time is short!

Project One:

Restore a '72 SL125. I tore down its engine over the summer and have most everything I need to start the rebuild except a front rim (original one *might* be usable). It needs a bit of everything, especially time.

Project Two:

Build a '76 Yamaha RD400 total custom. It, too, is already down to the frame with engine removed. Its frame and the SL125's go out for powder coating soon; when it comes back, this one is mostly a bolt-on exercise. Engine teardown is one hold-up -- pistons are frozen in the jugs and I don't want to cut the rods. Once it's broken down, it goes out for porting. I have a set of 32 mm Mikunis with UFOs coming for it (stock is 28 mm), a pair of pristine Spec IIs and a front end from a Daytona all ready to bolt on. Haven't decided whether to add a fairing. It'll probably be a red frame with white bodywork.

Project Three:

'78 750K8. It's running now, and I hate to tear it down, but it's a ratty looking thing. So, I hope to do an 836 kit, some kind of different tank and seat, powder coat the frame, add Clubmans/resets and do new body work.

Project Four:

'76 CJ360T. Carbs are off but could be put back together and the bike run in a weekend. But some PO really fubar'd the paint and the whole thing looks pretty ratty -- I'm almost ashamed for it to see the light of day until it's completely torn down and redone. Have a spare parts engine en route, an NOS exhaust and other bits and pieces already.

Project Five:

'70 SL350K0. Have two of these: one gold, one red, plus a parts engine. Neither are even torn down, yet.

Project Six:

'82 Suzuki GS550L. Another cosmetic disaster. Needs pipes/paint/tires/TBD. Probably aim to have this one ready to go on the market by Easter.

I'm hanging on to the others, for now.

(No, I don't think I'll accomplish all of these projects by spring).

Three winter projects on the docket:

1- New cam chain tensioner in the CB360T, along with a new turn signal and some other little misc. details.

2- New head gasket in the CB550 (Wife's tired of washing oil stains out of her jeans)

3- Finish gathering a few more resto parts and paint the tank and sidecovers for the 750
