Sounds like fun. If I can get someone to watch my love child I will make a few.

Out of left field, but I've been slowly getting my shizzle together to start my backyard workshop.  I fiddled with whipping up a scaled drawing of my house/lot/ and the new shop/shed building yesterday in MS Visio.  Printed it out along with a few permit app pages, and after 20 minutes and a few bucks, I got a building permit.  So, now I guess I have to start doing something about it.

In anticipation of that I just uploaded it to a web album.  I'm not super smart, so I couldn't get Visio to display measurements in feet consistently.  Many of the reference measurements are in inches.  Also, I opted not to add my driveway or fencing.

Neat! I built a shop a couple of years ago that I'm still settling into. It's great to have it, but getting it built wasn't much fun. Construction took waaaaay longer than necessary, simply because people wouldn't show up when they were supposed to.  If you're doing it yourself, that shouldn't be a problem, or if not, hopefully you'll find a contractor less flaky than mine.
I understand that there are pesky details like budget, lot dimensions, and building permits that get in the way, but if I could recommend anything to you, it would be to make it a couple feet deeper and wider. If its strictly to be a bike workshop, disregard. It should be fine as is. But if you intend to do any car repair, you'll find that by the time you have some shelves, a work bench and tool chest along the walls, you'll have little working room left. An extra foot all around will make a big difference, believe me.
Even with what you've shown on the drawing though, you'll still love it, and wonder how you ever did without. Congrats for getting on the road to making it happen.

400 sq. ft. is pretty decent, but whatever the square footage you will find a way to outgrow it. Hell, I just want around 100 sq. ft. for extra space.

How much did your permits cost you roughly? When you going to start?

It's going to be a combination workshop, storage space.   I'm positive it's going to end up being too small at some point, but I'm on a tight budget.  I just need to get something put up soon as my house is filling up with motorcycle parts and other chaos.   In lieu of building or paying for a contractor, I decided to go with a metal carport based structure.  I know it's not that substantial, but for the size and time of completion the price just can't be beat.  I should be able to order my building and have it completed and installed within a month.  My permits ran me about 25 bucks.  Our city bases permit fees on the estimated cost of the building project.  I told them about 4k for it.  It'll actually be more or less depending on what I do for the foundation.  If I can scrimp in a few more spots elsewhere, it'll have a concrete pad under it.  Thanks for the encouraging words, Jay.

Greetings boys & girls. Jay here. (Water Buffalo guy.)
Enjoyed breakfast in VB and the neat old bikes.
I'm not very smart, so probably won't be able to keep up with the witty banter. But I thought I might check in here from time to time anyway, if that's alright.
Today, I'm throwing in a plug for the Friday Night Dinner rides starting this Friday, and running through October. Meet up is the old Siloam Springs Cycle shop (1630 E. Main St.) First group leaves at 6:30, sport bikes at 6:45.
Also, Brookside Cycles in Tulsa is hosting a vintage motorcycle show 11:00-3:00 on Sunday, April 15. I'll be heading over on the Buff about 9:00 from Siloam, if it isn't hailing.

I'll have to try and make it out to one of these rides. Is there a predetermined destination you are eating at each week?

Different place every week. Majority of the time it's some place along the Fayetteville - Bella Vista corridor, but we also go places like Tahlequah, Alma and Locust Grove. There's no pre-published schedule, since the idea is to get folks to show up and ride their motorcycles, not just meet at the restaurant. On the other hand, Charlie Smyth, the guy who picks the routes and destinations, honestly doesn't have a problem with people contacting him ahead of time when they really need to know. His phone # is 479- five two four - 8 five 77.

Sounds good to me.

What all bikes do you have Jay? I noticed the Chang Jiang shirt, and since you ride a Buffalo I assume you got some cool scoots in the stable.

Well, nothing that the mainstream cruiser and sportbike crowds would consider cool, just stuff that I happen to like. Besides the Buffalo which you've seen, there's the Chang Jiang (6 volt flathead version), and my "main" motorcycle, a Y2K Guzzi Jackal. The Jackal Dusty was riding is technically mine, but he's buying it off me.
Aside from that, just project bikes: a '93 Dnepr rig with a blown engine, a '67 Guzzi 125 Stornello Sport that occupies several boxes in my garage, and a '78 Guzzi Robin moped that doesn't run, but was free.

Yup. It's a cheap Emgo repro though. I dropped it earlier today and cracked it pretty good. It'll need a new lens before too long now.

Unrelated...  but I handled the final transaction of a deal for my dad on a new to him fishing boat yesterday.  I picked it up from the seller and decided to take it out on the water for a shake down run.  There's a strange feeling with getting to test drive someone else's new toy before they do.  I have to say I'm amazed at the quiet and smooth operation of the newer 2 strokes.   A few pics for proof.

good looking boat Andy. Is it 16 or 17 foot? I have an old beat up bass tracker that I will likely sell this year if you want to handle that transaction as well.

It's a 16 foot '97 model.  The motor is a 2k model merc.   The seller thought the impeller was bad, so he dropped the price.  It turned out to be a stopped up pee hole issue.  Unfortunately someone has "fixed" the trailer and boat wiring, and there are wire nuts everywhere.   I really pushed my dad into buying it.  He's been talking about buying a little fishing boat for the family to use for a while.  I found it for him, and we looked it over.  The price was decent, so I told him if he didn't buy it I would.   What do you think you'll ask for yours?  If I don't get as much access to my dad's boat as I would like, I'll be looking for one of my own.  What are you gonna ask for yours?  Details?

whale, I bought it halvsies style with my dad so I have to check with him. The boat itself has some dents and dings in the hull but I have sealed most/all of them to the point that when I had it in the water a month ago for 3 days straight, I got hardley any water out when I put it on the trailer. The motor is an old 50 horse mercury blue stripe and is much older than the boat but seems to run well. I am thinking in the neighborhood of 1800 but I will have to look around and see if im in the ball park. I paid less, but it didnt run when I got it and I have put at least 600 bucks in it for repairs and tune up tires etc..
