it started life as a Test-rig
« on: April 17, 2011, 12:16:32 PM »
In order to testride some of my parts I decided to build a "test-rig" from parts I had lying around for awhile.
Plan is to test it on May 15th in Croix in the North of France. Along the way the rig will be more handsome than in it's present state. But hey,  it is a purpose build.

Plan is to give the dry clutch a real beating and to see if the self-generating ignition holds up.
Present engine is a rebuild '78 F2, all new chains and tensioners, new rings and new 41a cam. So nothing to fancy, but a good base to start with.
Some parts are loaned from the Japauto, due to the rebuild of that one.

That's a good idea Rob and a pretty cool test platform too.  ;)

Not sure about that TG guy riding it though.... ;D ;)

Brent, that new ignition would need some crash testing to see if it can really stand the abuse, dont you think?

Hey Rob,

If you Really want to load that clutch up, I weigh in at a svelte 125kg. ;D
Looking for a ride at the moment.
I popped our little Hy-Vo at the Victorian Titles a couple of weeks ago.
We have not blown a motor for five years, it sh!ts me >:(

Cheers,
Brian

thanks Tg for your offer, but like Bear I am a bit chunky (115 kgs) so that will make the clutch work for its money. And since Croix is a kind of 'Mickey Mouse' circuit the gearing will be set very low, so we'll see.
@Brian: know the feeling when you loose a good engine. but suspect there will be another one.. Heads up, mate.

Hi Colin,
If there will be a chance after the initial testing by myself, maybe we can arrange something in the near future.
Good luck in Spa this weekend and keep the good side up! Please say hi to Frank from me.

Cheers, Rob

So just back from a weekend in Croix en Ternois. Had a very good stay with both my boys and two friends of mine who came over to help out. Thanks Ed(Hailwood here) and Marco.
I did manage to put some laps on the bike and give the clutch a good trash, although the carb's did not behave below 4k. But the bike got a lot of eye and there were a lot of interested people for the bike and clutch in particular. Had a minor issue with the clutch but managed to solve that on the spot.
I did enjoy the ride and so did a group of spectators who applaude me after a stint, they thought the bike looked and sounded great. Always good to hear.
So here some proove of using the clutch on track.

Ok, Ok a bit overweighed but like I said enjoyed the outing. Bike will be painted shortly.

It looks real cool Rob. ;) I particularly like the front AMA number plate and was trying to figure what the holes were for.
The reason for the holes dawned on me when I saw your second picture.......

 ;D ;D ;D ;D,

Thanks Sam. Since Croix is a (very) short circuit, decided to put just this AMA-style numberplate on. For a longer one I can option for a quarter fairing.

Hey Jim,

In fact I had too remove the self-generating ignition for now, due to the amount of work on the other parts. But that is next on the todo list.
Well the thought behind it is to offer the clutch to 'the public' so to speak but have to make sure it is reliable. It seems it is, had just one minor issue and could solve it on the spot. Yes, hope it will be a hit.
Tomorrow starting to adjust the carb's with some bigger jets and another needle setting. Next run it will goooooooooooooo.....!!

Cheers, Rob

I never thought a 750 could look that small. I guess you are a big lad Rob. Glad things worked out for you and the boys.

So today finally had the time to weigh the 'rig'. Bryan and me put it on a scale front and back to see how the weight balance was. During my ride at Croix I felt there could not be much wrong with it, feeling a good 'balance'.
Total with half a tank of gas: 194.0 kgs.
Front: 95.5 kgs
Rear:  98.5 kgs
That means a 49.2 / 50.8 % balance, not bad at all.
