No, you're right, sandcast is a misnomer. But it stuck.

Wow, so little about that bike is "right". It's not a sandcasst and, built in November , I don't believe it could be titled '69 without some fudgery. Is that right?

That seems like a very reasonable price IMHO.  That bike wouldn't last a day on Craigslist in Cali...

No argument, it looks like a great bike, but it's never gonna be a sandcast.. and that's how this thread started. The thing is, I looked at the OP's website ... He KNOWS his bikes. Has some awesome stuff.
How could it even be a question as to what this is?

"Tank is wrinkle Sandcast an needs light cleaning inside.".... Never heard that sort of description before.  Is this so the ad shows up when people search ebay for "Sandcast"?

Unfortunately quite a bit of the original expensive stuff is missing such as the gauges, air box, fork ears, seat, control with black kill switch, probably recessed ignition, front fender looks re cut, original engine probably has issues etc etc. For a collector - restorer there is a lot of work and money to invest there.

It's a question, because he obviously isn't the expert you think he is. Looking at his website, I don't see anything that indicates he's a model expert. And frankly, a novice could have answered his question with some informed Googling. Aside from ekpent's observations, the carbs are also wrong, and it doesn't run. Anyone who pays that price is just asking for it, IMHO.

That's not nearly as bad as I had thought....King had me worried with the "expensive" comment. Sure it aint cheap but not out of line as far as I can tell

really would like to know about why the post sandcast motors are worth something different.
Its simply an issue of rarity. During the first run of CB750s, pre K1, there were several changes as the factory scrambled to keep up with an unexpected demand, and unexpected problems ie chain breaking, head gasket leaks, synch carbs with 4 cables etc.

Changing from sandcast to diecast improved the speed at which they could manufacture engines (I think). Some said it was to make a stronger case to resist breakage but I can't see that. Never saw a diecast case not break when the chain broke. I was working in shops back then, saw and warranteed many broken cases.

Anyway, that was the biggest single lineof demarcation, the change to diecast. That makes the sandcast engines, and the bikes they were in, the most rare, and so the most valuable to collectors.

Even in the short run of sandcasting, there were many smaller subsets of rarity (I think). No expert on that. My favorite has always been K1/K2.

Many states will title a bike in the year it was sold, not the year it was made. So a bike that sat in a crate, for anyone of a number of reasons, can end up with a later year title. Especially in the period 1968 to 1974. One must be careful when buying that one gets what one thinks they are getting. Honda got sued for allowing this misdating to happen and lost. Hence they quit the reliance on "K" model numbers and went to model years after 1974ish. They still used K numbers but they more closely resembled the calendar year as well.

Ther was one year when there were 3 CB175s "Ks" available in the same calendar year.

Thanks guys, many good comments.  I have been chopping these things in half for many years now and never bothered to educate myself on the subtleties of the sandcast year.  I honestly thought all 69's were sandcast and the engine change was done in the next model year, not midstream as I know now.  In hindsight, $2250 for a bike that only needs a carb clean and fresh battery is not too bad.  More than I usually have to pay, but not bad.   I am correcting the "custom" parts from my inventory of parts bikes including correct 4-4 exhaust, rebuilt correct serial number engine, and Candy Gold paint.  It will then be ridden for awhile and auctioned on eBay.  I expect to be done in 4-6 weeks and another $350 give or take.  The parts bikes will be a big help with that.  Now you know.  No secret ulterior motive, no shameless promotion, just an honest, inside look at how it is done in the world of making money in this hobby.  Oh yeah, built 11/69, titled as a 70.

Oh, OK, I thought you threw down some serious money thinking it was sandcast.
Sounds like you'll do alright on the deal.

Are you putting HM300 exhaust pipes on it ?. If you could source up some correct speedo and tach gauges, even 71's would be better than the others, and painted fork ears that would help your selling price somewhat.

ekpent,

Exactly.  I have a set of 71 gauges with the correct strap type top tree, two sets of early 4-4 exhaust that I will combine to make one good set, and the color change to candy gold was dictated by the need to paint the bucket and ears to match.  The current paint is professional, and beautiful, just not correct and impossible to match.  The original seat pan came with the bike so that will be repainted and recovered with the Honda logo in silver across the back.  I couldn't figure out if the ducktail was correct for my bike, or not, so I went with the standard flat seat.  Little things like the chain guard and handlebars I have several of laying around.  What people need to start to understand is that it takes multiple project bikes now to make one good restoration if original parts are used.  Where it used to take two to make one, I am seeing four or five needed now to gather all the pieces.  Obviously, the frame/engine/title combination is key to any meaningful build. That is why I am rebuilding the engine that was a serial number match to my frame.  The PO had the sense to keep it all these years even though it was stuck.  It did surprise me that no one is interested in the bike as it sits now as a project for $2350.  If people think an engine rebuild, a paint job, and an exhaust swap, is a lengthy restoration, they are wrong.
