Does anyone know if it's possible to remove the head and cylinders on a 1971 CB500 Four without first taking the engine out of the frame?
Thanks in advance.

You can probably get the head off, but the cylinders have to be lifted clear of the studs that run threw from the case to the heads. So no, you will have to remove the engine to get the cylinders off.

My '76 CB550 is sitting right now with the head & cyl's off, motor still in frame. '71 CB500 is very similiar bike.
I did read the CB750 motor must be pulled to do same.

All Standard Honda 500/550/650 can be stripped to base gasket level with engine in the frame.
WARNING
read the manual CAREFULLY about re-installing the cam cover
