1976 CB550 Chain Question
« on: June 11, 2011, 06:20:56 PM »
I believe I need to replace my sprockets and chain.  I also believe I need:
17 t and 35 t sprockets and a 100 link non-oem chain.

Does anyone have recommendations on brands; preferably not made in China.

Thank you.

JT sprocket front and back 17/37 stock

http://www.bikebandit.com/jt-sprockets-steel-motorcycle-sprocket?mg=957&t=1&td=1

17 - $20.16
37 - $26.99

ek heavy duty 530 100 link chain non o ring
http://www.bikebandit.com/ek-530-sr-heavy-duty-non-sealed-motorcycle-chain

$47.66

and honestly if your teeth on the front and rear are still good i wouldnt replace the sprockets

now some people will chime in and say the chain will wear down faster if you dont use new sprockets..... well we use the standard non o ring chains.... there cheap.... no reason to replace the sprockets if there still good

now if you where using some $150+ x ring moon chain then it will be worth getting fresh sprockets.

just keep the chain lubed up well and you will be fine

Whatever you do, DON'T fit an o'ring chain to your 550. Do a search here for crankcase damage that will result.

Not quite correct Frostyboy.  You can't use a 530 O-ring (to wide, case damage), but you can use a 520.  This does require new 520 sprockets though.

I've never been able to locate 520 sprockets for the 550.
Any tips there?

I hesitate to suggest this.  But, it is possible use a 530 Oring chain if you offset the front sprocket 1/8 inch.

But, oring chains are heavier and stiffer than standard chains.  Basically, it eats up more HP from whatever your bike makes.

If you are going for a long distance marathon, maybe the trade off is worth it to you.

The rear I'm using came from SprocketSpecialties (38T alloy), the front is a custom 17T.  Basically a stock CB550 530 remachined for a 520 width chain, although not quite that simple.  You can also use an XL (?, have to check the notes ::)) 16T on the front.  I went 17/38 to get a bit more initial accel., without killing the top end.  This also leaves the option of going 16T front for the stop light wars, without having to mod the chain. ;) :)

You could offset (have to do the rear to match), but that would require a custom sprocket, as moving the stock one out board would cover the fixing groove in the splines.

Like anything else, not all o-ring chains are created equal.  I should explain that I went 520 o-ring for specific reasons. 1st o-ring because my experience is that they run cleaner, and longer when properly maintained.  I plan to continue showing the bike, so reduced cleaning is a priority.  520, because it weigths the same or less than a stock 530, and that's the largest size that will fit a 550.  The chain I'm using was developed for MX racing, and low friction was a priority.  I won't quote the manufactures hype, but this is the link to their tech stuff - http://sidewindersprockets.com/v-series_smart_chain.html

Does it eat HP, guess maybe I should throw a standard 520 in the box TT, for when I take the 550 to the dyno for jetting.  For sure if I was racing it, there would be a standard 520, racing quality chain on it.

Cheers :)

u want to go all nutzzzz on chains check this place out..... aluminum is the thing of the past what hot is titanium sprockets....stronger lighter will never wear down and they can make a custome 530-520 conversion

ii think they might even have kits or a package buy for a custom make. you can even make you sprocket the way you want to look so it could be all cool looking

they even have this uber spiffy moon chain

LOL

but ya in all seriousness is it really a good chain? can you notice a difference from a standard o or x type chain?

im just wondering because when i get the $$$$ i want to do a 520 conversion and i read about that chain a while ago but didnt think anyone on these forums wouldve actually went through the hassle of a conversion and get that exact chain

why didnt you go with those titanium sprockets?

My only observation to date (purely subjective) is that it was very flexible, and moved smoothly.  The wheel did seemed to spin slightly longer, but that could just as easily be all the new parts (wheel bearings/chain/sprockets).

I'm going to be using a dyno to finalize my jetting / tune.  Might pick up a standard 520 to compare. ;)

I already had an alloy 520 rear sprocket, so a sprocket wasn't on the list when I got the chain.  The additional weight savings of Ti for the cost, is hard to justify for the street.

ya if you have extra dyno time and you want to swap chains i would be very very very interested and seeing the difference! i bet no one at that site would think anyone would actually take the time to test their brain chain so they can make all these accusations about it.

ow come one you can justify the Ti sprocket its..... Ti... you could be like "dude look at that..... ya thats right its Ti, do you have a Ti sprocket... nope didnt think so, so i win!" yup thats what i would say  8)
