Glen Campbell has Alzheimers...
« on: June 22, 2011, 06:20:32 PM »
I don't care what anybody says, I'm sad. One of the greatest vocalists and guitarists ever. A sign that this generation of performers is dwindling.

He'll finish the final tour, I hope he can. I've been listening to You Tube fideos for an hour.  :'(

Solo starts at about 2:35, so effortless.

That's a shame Ron, my father was a big C&W fan - the old stuff, not todays country - so I grew up listening to alot of his stuff. I remember watching his variety show when I was a kid also.

you tube has about every old country song you could want to hear.  I sometimes think I am the only old country fan but sattelite radio and classic country stations tell me a different story.

Country is huge, I've heard it dwarfs the remnants of Rock and Roll. I enjoy both.

Glen became even more popular, in a way, as he got old. Like Johnny Cash who went so far as to become a bit of a hit in New Age circles, covering very introspective non-country songs.

I've read his 70th+ album 2008 "Meet Glen Campbell" was  "covering tracks from artists such as Travis, U2, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Jackson Browne and Foo Fighters".

Here's a heartfelt These Days from Jackson Browne/Greg Allman:

Some great songwriting ,too, I was too young to appreciate the political undertones of that one  when it was on the radio, but listening to it now I appreciate that  it's one of the best songs of  Viet Nam era.

treefiddy: Jimmy Webb is the songwriter for most of GCs hits, especially the early ones like Lineman and Galveston. JW said he didn't have Viet Nam in mind when he wrote it, more like the Spanish American war, a time when Galveston was at its Social peak. It was not a war protest song as much as a simple lament of a soldier going to war and leaving his girl behind. But the timing of the release made many think it was VN related and JW let it go. Art is as art is.

Be that as it may...

Here's GC in June, never giving up. Could have done without the last note, But the rest of it is great IMO. The alzheimers is setting in, but he's on automatic and enjoying it.

Not a big country fan, but I really like Glen Campbell and his music. Do you guys recall when he was in True Grit with John Wayne in 1969. I wish I had his head of hair back then. Sounds really good in these videos and his guitar playing is still pretty sharp. I hope he does not just stop cold as they say to continue to perform will help slow the disease. But I can understand he would not want to do a whole show in that condition. Our best to Glen Campbell!!! He has true grit for sure...

Rumor was that John Wayne hand picked Campbell for the part of Texas Ranger in True Grit..

My bad, the Lineman video above was from a 2008 concert, uploaded recently to youtube. Nevertheless, probably hadn't listened to GC more than in passing for the last 30 years, now I can't get enough.

Ive always liked Glen Campbell. Watched his tv show and liked him with John Wayne in True Grit. I think he's rated as one of the top guitar players ever. A lot of people don't know this but he was a member of the Beach Boys for a little while in the early to mid 60's

It wasn't that he was a member of the Beach Boys but rather he was a member of the "Wrecking Crew" a group of sessions musicians who played on many of the hit records of the late 50s and 60s.
WreckingCrewTribute.mov
Maybe it was Glenn who played the haunting riffs in California Dreamin?

One good thing of all this is that YouTube is being flooded with old stuff, and new, related to Glenn.

I just wanted one of these tour dates to be successful for his sake. This is the third or fourth one and they are all getting good reviews. It was a gutsy move.
