Cam Chain Ideas???
« on: August 30, 2011, 05:34:30 pm »
I ordered a new cam gear and chain for my 75 550. The prob is the woman at honda ordered me an extra link instead of a master link. Where can I find a breaker for this app.  Or if anyone has any other ideas on getting this new chain on so i can Finnish the assembly, it would be greatly appreciated.  I wanna ride it this season!

Anything would help!
 Thanks,
Matt

You probably got the right parts. The stock chain is an endless chain. The way to put it on involves removing the crank. Complete engine teardown.

The shortcut involves the master that looks like a link, is a "rivet" master link. You are to cut the chain, thread it thru, then install the master using a rivet link tool ($85+/-).

http://www.z1enterprises.com/Cam-Chain-BreakerRiveter-Tool-4011.aspx

With some skill and knowledge of technique you can peen the ends of the link over without the tool, using a hammer and small chisel.

Completely bummed? Now what?

When I replaced my cam chain, I just took the bottom half, the new chain and a new master to my local semi-retired Honda mechanic.  He has the tools and decades of experience doing what MCRider describes.  He had it done in 15 minutes and charged me $35.  win win

Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Over on the twins site, a guy claims he was told by the manufacturer that since these are solid links (as opposed to hollow), they get pressed on and not peened.  Mine was pressed on with a pair of vice grips...

Heres the quote:

Quote
I have replaced the cam chains in a 1971 CB450, and 1973 CB450. Purchased both with master link from Z1.  I also received an unbroken 128 link chain. The new chain needs to be broken (one link removed). After correctly threading new chain through engine and head, install new master link, (total chain links now returned to 128).  Note: After installation of first chain I almost destroyed the new master link trying to flange the master link posts per maint. manual. Called Z1 who contacted the maker of the new chain. Informed old orginal master link had hollow posts that needed flanged to keep the link plate in place. The new master link for the new 219h chain has solid posts and the link plate needs to be pressed over solid posts and is a pressure fit. To help with this process I purchased from Z1 the Chain breaker they recommened, also worked great to pressure fit the master link plate over master link posts.

I'd need more confirm than that, even though they got a response from the manufacturer. I'd have to get two or 3 responses confirming that you don't peen the ends over. My expereince was it is a press fit AND and peening/flaring of the ends.

It would be difficult to flare it if there is no dimple in the end of the post, gotta admit. I wonder what the posts look like on a drive chain. Its a press and Flare install. I'll go look.

I've seen both types. the "soft" link has dimpled ends which are flared over to hold the plate, the ends are usually a diferent colour. the hard link has no dimples and is a press fit, that's what is in my baby. I was unsure about the installation so went and saw an engineer who deals in chains and he said press fit only for the hard link. if you try and peen the ends over, there is a risk of bending the pins.

Well heres what I ended up doing:

I took a chain breaker tool, and took one of the press plates out and replaced one side with a ball bearing.
First I pressed the chain together w a vise grip so it was holding by itself.
Then I took the chain breaker with the bearing in on of the sides and cranked away.
(By putting pressure on the pin between the ball bearing and the flat side, little by little, due to the amount of preasure, you can see the pin start to mushroom out.)

From what I heard "Its an old motorcycle trick" i was told, so let see if it holds.  The chain is not bent, theres no issues with flex, and the pin cannot be pushed out.  So hopefully this old trick worked!

Thanks for all the imput guys on the forum!
Goodluck to all!
Matt

Maybe a good idea to open the engine and replace the primary chains with tensioner too?
If the cam chain need to be replaced the internals must be tired too
