so im in the stage of painting everything for reassembly and i was grinding down the engine to get all the paint off and after that i decided to take off my sat cover and then my kick start cover to polish.

after taking the kick cover off i noticed some broken metal pieces.

then looking closer i noticed that literally the molded section of the engine that holds the kick starter spring broke off........

ill take a picture tomorrow but im screwed...... ill have to replace the hole bottom end of the motor to fix it.

im so pissed! now there is no way i can ride before the snow falls.... guess im rebuilding the engine  :-\

A skilled tig welder could get that back together for well under $100.  No disassembly required.

JB Weld.

seriously? that will hold the tension of the kick start and me kicking it?

i know you cant weld on white metal but the epoxy will seriously hold it?

That part really doesn't take much load.  It only holds the spring that returns the kick start lever from slipping to the side.  JB weld, or even a half-@$$ welding job would easily hold that.  I'm curious why it broke though.

Just to be sure, the location (dowel) you have the spring right now is incorrect.  It is supposed to hook behind that piece that is broken off.

Congrats, that's a stroke of luck that is wasn't worse!

You can also use this. It's a low temperature aluminum brazing solution that from what I understand is a durable repair. The great part is you only need a torch and not a TIG or the skills to use a TIG.

What?!?  :o

the engine was splotchy so i decided to grind off all the paint..... well maybe not grind but use one of those brush knot attachments.

then paint with vht universal aluminum. from what i understand its close to the stock color.

worse case scenario drill a hole through it and the case. tap some threads into the case and put a small bolt in it.  If all the already mentioned methods fail you, it could probably be done.

Get the area super-clean (brake cleaner) and dry thoroughly before applying the JB Weld.  Come up with a way of clamping the piece into place with some force, i.e. don't just tape it into place.  The rough broken surfaces are already ideal for taking JB weld, and the piece should jig-saw right back into place exactly.

Use the slow-drying stuff, it's final strength is greater than the quick-dry stuff.  Don't use JB Stick, use the thin stuff in the little tubes.

The cases are aluminum so if you can weld that, just be aware that the alloy isn't pure AL.  That aside they can be and have been welded.

Looks to me as if spring pressure, and also probably the engine cover, will serve to hold that piece in place, and all forces on it should be compression forces.

I think JB will hold it fine so long as its carefully applied.

Tip, once it's more or less dry but not fully cured, that's the time to remove any squeezed-out excess with an exacto knife or razor blade.

I would pin it for extra strength

Drill a small hole one both sides and place a bit of piano wire in there. 1/8 or 3/32nds should do it.

Get jb on it before you stick it in and it should help to hold place as it dries.

i just had a gander at a case i have,it forms the return stop for the kick spindle aswell, youll want plenty good jb weld.

the easy way out is dont fit the kicker and use electric only,,the kicker mustave had a knock in the return direction to snap that off?or some one let it fly back without releasing it with the foot a few times?

I volt for JB weld part just the way it is no pin to have to line up on both sides. Give it a extra day to cure it will work just fine.like mystic said clean the extra off before it dries.

did you break it yourself xsmooth?the kicker would be able to go forward as much as to touch the clutch housing, you never saw that?if the jb lets go you run the risk of a jam up if that bit gets free, leave it or have it welded properly.

I'm with Dave500 on this, I'd file a small slot so the spring dosesn't slip across.
I don't think that JB will hold such a heavy spring (hey I could be wrong) and I always prefer the simple approach to repairs. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!
