Anyone bought a CycleX 750 motor?
« on: September 13, 2011, 10:29:21 AM »
Thinking about buying a new motor for my K3 rather than fix mine.

Anyone had any experience w/ CycleX motors?

Anybody know other sources for complete motors?

P.S. - I'm not looking for a super motor. Just a good, RELIABLE stocker or slightly modified stocker.

They have a good reputation, no first hand experience.

I have been very pleased with the parts I've gotten from them and Ken is very knowledgeable about these bikes, but I've never bought a complete engine from them. I would, if the price was right.

Well it ain't gonna be cheap but it won't be a whole lot more than fixing mine - and it'll be a whole lot less trouble vs. getting the valves done, maybe bored to second step, fixing the tranny, sourcing all the parts, and me fumbling and bumbling with it for weeks.

The other option is to sent it to Honda Man but then I have to pull it, pack it, take it to a shipping dock, wait, and repeat in reverse.
If HM was closer it would be there by now but the shipping thing is a PITA. Plus it's my daily driver so I want to minimize down time.

Buy another motor and have that one rebuilt or build it yourself?

I've bought many parts from them and spoken to Ken at length.  It's clear he knows these bikes well so I definitely would not hesitate to buy a motor from him.

How much is he selling them for out of curiousity.? Can you get stockers and modified.Seems like he would like to get a 'core' back on the ones he sells.

I've heard good things about their motors. And they make some badass carbs. I'm still waiting for them to finish testing their 30mm carb kit for stock sohc cb750's.

Uh, you need to feebay a running motor or get one from a local motorcycle junk yard.
I am sure the engine he sells is the dean's peanuts but that is stupid money to spend on a CB 750 engine unless some porting, hot caming and boring have been done to it. Even then I would just farm the porting and boring out and do everything else myself and save some duckets.

No kidding, if I could sell about 30 of those types of engines a year I could theoretically quit my day job and be elbow deep in grease and crud.

well, if you've got the skills, the tools, the space, & the time to do it youself then rock on.
If I was retired, the kids were grown, and the garage was clear, then I'd be all over it but I know if I started it then it would wind up as a pile of unassembled parts sitting in bins for years.
I just want it done.
Shop rates around here are $60/hr or more plus $100-$150 to bore each jug. Plus parts. So to have someone rehab mine locally is about the same as buying one...

If you've got one to sell, let me know!

You could do it.
You will need a large tank to clean engine cases and parts.
A large ultrasonic cleaning machine. Well there goes the profit from the first 4 engines.

Are you sure it needs boring? If there's no ridge, it probably is OK as-is and you can re-use pistons, hone the cylinders and put standard rings in. Head rebuilds aren't cheap though and I don't think lapping valves is a substitute for machining.

It will not do any good to lap a valve that has a worn out valve guide.

As far as re boring a cylinder it has to be decided upon AFTER it is measured top and bottom and the piston is also measured.

Personally, if I run out of motors for my CBs, a nice CRF 450 motor is going in that #$%*!
Crazy power and with my brothers fabbing skills and my body work/paint skills we already planned it out and actually found a guy that has done it...

hehe, just an idea  :P

The other option is to sent it to Honda Man but then I have to pull it, pack it, take it to a shipping dock, wait, and repeat in reverse.

Well, by Spring I will have one or two rebuilt 750 engines for sale (stock, with step bores of 1mm or less). One is a K3, the other may be a K1. I have most of a K7, except the crank, that will also be a candidate soon.

I would take a Hondaman rebuild over a CycleX rebuild any day of the week, this is who you need to talk to if you are going to buy a rebuilt engine.
