CB750 shift link cover difference sandcast/diecast

I check on ebay for a sandcast gear shift cover.What is the difference between other year model and the sandcast cover? Interchangeable?

9 bolts vs. 10 bolts on later covers.  Not interchangeable.
Is that the gearshift cover or the clutch cover? I thought the latter.

The former all being the same except the later ones had a gear shift select graphic etched in the metal.?

My K0 has no gear shift numbers cast into the surface.  No external markings at all.  Same gasket as later models.

Pre-'74 covers do not have the shift pattern molded in the cover.  I think that change occurred mid-74.

So to answer the OP question, there is no identifier on the gear shift cover to ID it as sandcast/K0 or later.

Now back to the clutch cover. I don't know when the 9 screw switched to a 10 screw, that may be a K0 to K1 thing.

But, the 9 screw will fit and work on a 10 screw case. The 10th screw hole is visible to the public. I just did it, acidentally on my project. I have 10 screw K2 cases. But  I sent a 9 screw cover to the polisher. With a 9 screw gasket, it has full metal contact all the way around the 10 screw cases.



If you put a 10 screw cover on a 9 screw case you may get a leak, I don't know.

There are some differences between the sandcast and diecast transmission covers. When Honda switched from sandcast cases to diecast cases, the cover part number also changed:
 
Sandcast: 11360-300-030 
Diecast: 11360-300-040

The diecast part number supersedes the sandcast cover making them interchangeable.

just curious of 2 things:
Are the "sandcast covers" actually sandcast themselves or just made at the time of the sandcast cases? and

Could one tell the difference from looking or would they have to have each in hand to tell the thinness?

If you look at the dyno cover, at the front, on the engine side, just above the split line in the cases, there's a "bump". On my early sand cast (#260) it's very thin, on my 12/69 diecast (16XXX), like my K1, and probably later K's, it's a lot thicker. You might be able to pick it up in the picture below.
The type font on the valve cover is also thinner on the early cover. The second picture is #260, the lower one the 12/69.
If you have the shifter cover in one hand and a newer one in the other, the old one will feel lighter and the metal edges look thinner. They just feel different, same with the sprocket cover.
I've found subtle differences in the K0 and K1 cases as well.

Sorry MC, missed your other question. The covers have a smooth finish on the inside and polish nicely so I would say they are not "sandcast". Cliff.

Thanks Magpie. i can see the attraction to the subtleties of the old stuff. I'm glad, for me, that I'm not so into it. I never was good at puzzles.

Correct me if I am wrong but didnt the sandcast gear covers only have 8 holes?

We'll let a more expert confirm this, but I think it was only the clutch cover that was changed. Early had 9 holes, later had 10. Hre's a 9 hole cover on a 10 hole case. By accident.
