Just my 2 cents, but the last thing someone needs on two wheels is another distraction.

I know. But I thought it would come in handy even to look at when stopped

This is what I use - a Garmin 60Csx  - its very handy for accurate speed, mileage, finding places etc...mounts will depend on what your dad has for a GPS.

Mounted in Garmin 60Csx cradle

Cradle attaches to ball which is attached to the bar:

here is the same ball but on my VStrom so all I need to do is move the cradle over

Good luck!
Andy

Badass Andy! Thank you. That's just what I meant. Highly off topic, but what tank bag is that in your avatar. I might ask Santa for one of those.

I'm going to have to break down and buy one. all the sport touring guys i know have them. They aren't any more of a distraction for most things than glancing at your speedo or tach. For a longer look you should pull over.

Lots of mounting systems out there. As said, depends on the GPS if you already have that. Otherwise you can buy a purpose built system.

I'm from the tank bag world too, and my GPS is folded paper stuffed in a map slot. I have to pull over to read it too.

I prefer a magnetic bag to do away with the harness. But i have a harness bag too and it's not much of a hassle.

Always a fear with the magnets what they might do to a camera, iPod etc. But I've never had a problem with either.

Hi Ron

I have used a magnetic tank bag for years and have the camera in the side pocket where its handy and accessible. Never been an issue with the magnets (even if its in the main compartment). Same goes for cell phones.

cheers
Andy

Yeah that's what i do, side pocket. Furthest from the mags as possible, besides that's where its easy to get to, though may not be necessary.

I use a Garmin Nuvi, but I think any should work.  The Arkon waterproof mount from Amazon.com and other places works very well and only cost $16.  I have used it for a couple of hours in pretty heavy rain with no issues.
