'72 CB 500 Carb part---can't find?
« on: December 16, 2011, 01:43:30 PM »
I recently picked up a '72 CB 500--garage find...since it's cold here in chicago, thought 'd take the winter to dis-assemble, clean, restore. I just began a carb clean/rebuild and ordered rebuild kits...i noticed that two items were missing off two carbs and the parts fiche shows them but does not reference. The description of the two parts is a "leaf spring" from the shop manual, they clip onto the brass insert from main jet, and then the bowl placesupward pressure on this when compressed and tightened. Does anyone know where i can get two of these? I've been through dealers, ebay, bike bandit, etc but no one can identify by a part number? Any help would be appreciatted as it's my first old Honda rebuild. Thanks!

Ah yes. those springs are made of unobtainium. You best bet is to find a deal on a set of carbs for doner parts. I found a decent set at a swap meet last year for $25. I've needed lots of parts off of them that you can't just buy anywhere including the springs.

But for a quick fix you can take a hack saw blade and fabricate a DIY spring that will work as a band aid.

use the band of a hose clamp, unwind one and make a temporary one,a hacksaw blade may be a bit brittle and hard to make that slot into.

Good luck! I was lucky enough to find some on a parts bike. Without 'em your mains will fall out.

a clever man could organise a "c' clip and a coil spring like from a retractable pen to retain it.

I've been looking at making some ridged roffing metal go away by using it in some usefu way. The ridges on it seem pretty close to this needed shape , cut them up onto srops and punch some proper sized  holes , but buiding  or roofing dog houses would use the metal  up quicker.

Actually I think DavidSilverSpares.com might be theplace to look for OS style stuff including these.

Ive had the same problem!!! but this worked for me hope it does for you. look at the main jet it should have a groove on it where the leaf spring jet retainer goes. take and go to a hardware store and get some springs and take one end bend to fit the groove  and make shure they are long enough to put light pressure on the fuel bowl . as long as they are snug in the jet groove the serve to hold the main jet in place!!
