Looking forward to meeting up with you again Booze72.  Look for a small two tone grey trailer, black Colorado, and Hopper's white Jimmy.  Actually just look for the green & white patio canopy, only one in the pits. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Tried posting this update last night, but I'm out in the country side (99 acres) home & pet (cat / x2 dogs / x2 horses) sitting.  Seems the wifi keeps dropping my connection. :(

Only a couple of things that needed repair, mainly vibration related ::) - the tach housing rotated in the ring mount, 7K was @ 12, now @ 9 / two of the 4 bolts holding the muffler end cap have gone walk about / the upper brake stay bolt is loose.  I've already repositioned the tach & riveted the outer casing to the ring mount / Tech wants a 'bull ring' added to the muffler end cap, and I'm going to have to pack it to meet db's for the last race.  Once it's back together I'll safety wire the bolts this time / There's a cotter pin in the stay bolt, but I've added a washer to take up clearance, so that's done.  The M/C is weeping at the top cover, ordered a new diaphram.

The new adjustment system for the chair brake works great.  Took about 5 minutes start finish to - remove rim / adjust / reinstall. ;D ;D ;D   To get the shifter working I had to use a GP pattern, which I'm not use to.  Going to look at going back to a regular pattern, but it requires a new lever & pivot point.  Would also like to make it a two prong, so I don't have to move my foot, front to back.  Because electric power is no longer an issue, I'm going to add a neutral light, the switch is already there.  It's bad finding it stock, and near impossible with the long linkage.  The good news is the new alternator works great.  Put it on the tender and it immediately went to 'maintanence'. 8)

That just leaves engine service - cam chain / tappets / clutch / oil & filter.  One of the tappet cover bolts feels like its stripping, so that will get a heli coil.  A leak down tester is also on the list.

After the pounding the engine took this past weekend, figured I follow your advice and get one.  It's an easy test to do, and the the potential to be one step ahead of a major failure, makes it cheap insurance. ;) :)

Took the exhaust off, not good news.  Seems using it as a skid plate was not a great idea. ::)  The tabs that hold the perforated baffle in place were all broken. :o  I'll take it to the welder to have new tabs put on.  The exhaust is/was to loud to pass at the last race of the season, so I've ordered packing, and will wrap it before putting everything back together.

Decided to keep the GP shift pattern, but go to a two prong pedal.  I'll do up a CAD drawing and have a new pedal water jet cut from alloy.  Just need to figure out a bearing setup for the pivot point.

Need some info Bear.  What is the spacing between the prongs/ bars on your shifter???  Looks like about 2 1/2 - 3" would be about right.

That sounds about right Brian.
I will measure and take pic when I get to the workshop tomorrow.
We are starting a rebuild on the "A" motor.
I promised Alex some data on this motor so I will start a thread to document the build.
I have just about finished a list of parts and part numbers.
It is taking a helluva lot longer to gather everything together than I first thought it would and my woefully inadequate records (read a heap of scribbled notes on the back of parts boxes) doesn't help much. :-[ :-[

Cheers,
Brian

Thanks Brian, look forward to getting the info & pic.  I did a ruff drawing, just need to finalize the dimensions.

Don't think my 'records system' is much better.....scribbled notes in one file, invoices in another. ::) ;D ;D

Got a used a GoPro Hero today.  It's an original one, not the HD version, but it was free. ;D ;D  Had to get an SD card, and bar mount for it, but it's working, so there will be video from Mosport.

New shifter should be ready Thursday, so I'll update changes (with pics ;)) then.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to having it.  Just loaded some software from GoPro on my old laptop.  I'm hoping I can video practice sessions, and then use them to when we debrief.

GoPro mounted, going to drill & safety wire the mounting bolts knobs.  Don't want it to shake off. ;)

The tach after the last race.  7K was straight up, good thing I don't look at it much, XS's don't spin to 10K and live!  The chrome shell rotated in the mount, they've now been riveted together. ;)

Other updates are a new 'flip' kill switch.  Middle position is ignition, third position is momentary start.  Filled the other old hole with a neutral light. ;D  Tech gave me a hard time over the exhaust tip, so a 'bull ring' has been added, and the baffle repaired.  All the sheet metal bolts that hold the end on were loose :o, so they get safety wired as well.

Yep, do that.
I watched mine bouncing down Gardner Straight at Phillip Island a couple of years ago.
Still works though. ;D

Very nice.  Can't make it out to Mosport, looking forward to the footage.

I know I still owe you guys some videos from SMP, but I'm best man in my brother's wedding and I'm starting a new contract. There's a lot going on these days and those videos do need some editing before they're posted.

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Little eye candy, know how everyone like photos. ;)   P/U the new shifter and did a quick mockup.  The bushing (behind shifter) was turned from bronze and is a press fit.  Also got lucky and P/U two NOS XS shifter rubbers for $4. ;D  Big thanks to Paul & Ryan @ HAI Waterjet, made everything in less than a week, and only cost $85. 8) 8)  Tomorrow I'll P/U all the correct bolts, and tap the bottom holes.  Oh, just to save the question - the chain link with the white dots is the Master (safety wired).  Makes it easier to find @ tech. ;) :)

Back from the VRRA Vintage Festival @ Mosport (now Canadian Tire Motorsport Park :()  Met up with Booze72, and GZ got a couple of laps of the track riding shotgun under the bubble. ;D ;D  I tried the video but haven't had time to see if it worked yet.  If I got anything I'll post it later this week.

As for the race report - Friday practice went well.  Tried using my old car lines with the sidecar.  Some worked, some didn't, mainly because they've done lots of renovations (old markers are gone, like the tree @ #2 :(); and things look a lot different when your head is 2' off the ground. ;)  Had some carb issues, but things got better (with fiddling) as the weekend progressed.  Biggest issue was the clutch, which keep losing its adjustment.  Made it increasingly more difficult the shift as the laps rolled by.  Made some more jetting changes Saturday night, and they really helped.  Was seeing 8K at the end of the straight. 8)  Definitely getting closer to getting the Weber sorted.  1st up when it gets home is the clutch though.

Saturday wasn't great.  In practice I heard a metallic sound, and parked it in turn 5.  There were only two heat races before ours.  By the time we got towed in, there wasn't enough time to pull the fairing, and check the engine.  So we missed the heat race, which put us potentially at the back of the grid for the final.  The Sunday final was our best effort so far.  Started 8th, finished 5th.  Lap times certainly weren't as quick as the fast guys - winner posted a 1:57+, my best was a 2:01. :(  Got blocked off the start by a slower rig, and lost touch with the lead pack.  Pretty much ended up riding by ourselves.  Would have liked to been with them, as I think we would have been a touch quicker with someone to chase.  The engine was a bear up the back straight; felt I could run with just about anyone, if it shifted cleanly.  Having older, worn tires didn't help though.  The back tire was really spinning up.  Will say the sliding one of these (every corner) was way too much fun, but a lot of work keep it pointing in the right direction.
