78 cb750F Monkey Trainer "she is done!"

So I have my next project on a truck and being shipped from NY to WA.  I recently purchased a 1978 cb750f from member Jaguar and it is enroute to my place in WA.  Since I already built up my 1977f into a cafe of sorts I wanted to build this up stock.  Not a total over the top restore but a good functional daily rider with smart mods, IMO.  I will be dropping in my 750f 836 engine which has a mild port, APE rebuild with stainless valves, Ti retainers HD springs, ext.  I have HD cam chains, HD studs and all new bearings and seals.  the plan is to run my extra set of CR carbs on the bike also.  Dyna2000 ignition and updated suspension with a stock look.

Figured I would start a thread to keep me motivated.











The engine



I decided to polish the covers at first, I figure I can always powder them if I don't like the polished look.  The plan is to completely tear the bike down, clean, powder the frame and other bits, clean and polish.  I want the bike to be a reliable daily rider.

Ha Ha, I would never powder these covers.  I have spent way too many hours sanding/polishing these.  I almost feel like they are part of my family know.

This is going to be a low key build Stevo. I will clean, polish bits and make it a sound runner.  I want to keep the bike mostly stock, or at least look stock with some minor styling changes.  I wast a bike I don't worry about riding year round.

The initial plan was to get a new / newer Ducati but whats the fun in buying something new? 

I am the kind of guy who needs a project and my 77 cb750f is complete so I was needing something else to do on the weekends and evenings.  When I saw the 78f for sale I jumped on the opportunity for another project that I could pay a bit more respect to the stock f.

Stock is the new black. These bikes looked great as they rolled off the line. Looks like you've a great place from which to start. The motor looks great, too!

Polishing up 30+ aluminum is a lesson in patients for sure.  I don't even want to know all the hours I have sanding and polishing what started out as turds.  I wish I would have taken before pics.  The covers started off from one of my spare engines I have laying around that I thought I would never be able to use.

here is what I came up with after multiple hours in the garage.


I also think I have decided on a paint scheme, well nvr2old did.  Close to stock but not quite.  Thanks Larry!  Being color blind makes it difficult for me to stray too far away from blacks or greys, but this will be different.

Thanks B, the polishing is a pain in the a$$ but worth the effort.  My hands are so beat up its difficult to type.

Tore into the new project.  1978 750f that I am doing a resto-mod on.  Dropped of the tins with nvr2old for a fresh paint job and hope to get the engine out this weekend so I can get the frame and a bunch of other bits off to powder.

Glad to see the bike will be used by a good home.

Fresh paint?  you are a perfectionist!  I envy you being able to go from a perfect vision in your head to a beautiful project in a reasonable amount of time.  I think im 5 years and millions of dollars over budget on my builds

Was able to get some much needed garage time this past week since the wife and kids are in AZ for a little sun. 

Got the old tired engine out.



Polished up and painted the comstars, put in sealed bearings and wrapped them in some Avons.  Blasted and painted the rotors.





Had some new oil lines made up then polished them up a bit.



Drilled and internally wired some Norman Hyde bars and added my old black powdercoated controls.





I hope to get everything else that needs to be powdercoated to the shop this weekend.   More to come...
