What emergency tools would you pack?
« on: May 04, 2013, 05:51:01 AM »
I have a cafe racer build that has a custom made seat, so there is no "underseat tools." So I want to build a compartment to store some emergency tools for on the road. Note: not for long road trips, but everyday riding.

I am sure there's been countless threads like this one, but it never hurts to revisit the philosophy. After searching generic motorcycle lists, I've come up with:

1) adjustable wrench
2) 4-in-1 screwdriver
3) multi-purpose pliers
4) allen wrench set
5) emergency flat repair

But are there any tools that are particularly suited towards Honda vintage bikes that I should get? Ideally I'd like the whole thing small enough to store somewhere on my bike, inconspicuously.

The OEM tool set still works pretty good. Just add cell phone and fat wallet. I like a good led flash light the kind that has a strap to wear on your head so both hands are free at night. Find out ahead of time who you can call at 2am that can pick the bike up if need be. My Honda shop and a local tire shop both will pick me up for $50 within 25 miles and my insurance will cover it anything over that is on me. 2 or 3 in the morning is not the time to figure this out ;)

You could do what I do.  One of the guys I ride with carries his whole tool set on his bike... and I carry pliers, Allen keys, a multi screwdriver, and the spark plug socket.

Do not have OEM tool set. Did not come with bike. That is why I am assembling a tool pack. I'm trying to devise something that can go under the custom seat.

What is the size WxLxHxD of your storage space? You can look at the factory kit on line then get tools in the brand name you like and you can make a roll up made out of some old jeans with pockets sewn in. I just laid out my tools on some brown paper bag and traced around the tools and took it to a lady in town that does sewing. $20 and she had the denim.

I'm that guy with a full tool set, haha. I have a tool pouch in my saddle bag with pretty much everything I'd need. Some friends have laughed, untill they or I needed something on the side of the road.

10mm & 12mm wrench, flathead, phillips, needlenose pliers, regular pliers, 1inch adjustable wrench and LED light is a must.
Cell phone and your wallet
Any more than that and are you actually fixing it on the side of the road? I think not really

This is for banging around town tho, trips I would expand a little. Most say a tube and spoons but how are you gonna inflate the tire? I don't smoke and am in good shape and there is no way in hell I'm blowin that tire up lol

Got the factory set with my 79 cb650. I have Vetter hard bags and trunk. Tobacco tubs carry 2 spare plugs; couple master links; spare ignitor(had 1 die and drove 15 miles home on 2 cyl.); 3/8" ratchet and all metric sockets up to 24mm. Small pair pliers and vice grips. Ready for anything except a flat.

Thanks all for your input.. got a solid list now.

Ken, thanks for the great idea. I was already thinking of a roll up, but didn't realize I could get it custom done for cheap like you pointed out.

My idea is to put all those tools in a custom button down roll up and strap it under the new seat.

I always carry the inner parts of a screw terminal ("luster terminal") with me. Great part to fix a broken throttle/clutch cable.
The rest is the factory tool set. I doubt that repairing a flat tire will work on the side of the road and I found that tire repair spray is a waste of money.

There are a couple of good threads on tool kits in the forums.

In one of the threads, someone posted a really good idea: Have a short range tool kit, and a supplemental larger kit for longer touring.

Couple of points to add to the posts below:
1. Try to get/assemble an OEM tool kit.  Especially the "Philips" drivers, as they're not really Philips but JIS, and they don't torque out like regular Philips drivers.  It's also nice to have the spark plug wrench.
2. Pack extra fuses
3. If you're running points, it's probably not a bad idea to include a small continuity light (I made a small one out of an LED and some alligator clips on the end of two wires), a feeler gauge, and a points file.

I try to always have a flashlight and Leatherman multi-tool on me when I ride.

I have an F, so I have a little extra room in the storage compartment.  I like to put an adjustable wrench in there, a rag, spare fuel filter, and a pair of nitrile gloves.

Good idea to put your old clutch cable coiled in side the left side cover. A bit of silicone can be used to adhere velcro straps to the cover or similar.
Throttle cables as well and small wrenches for those nuts if you need to change one of the cables.

If you go with a CO2 inflator, then use inflator cartridges as the airsoft ones have oil which will cause a tube to spring a leak with time...

I strap a militaey style MOLLE medical pack to my rear seat. Holt wrenches, tube repair, fixaflat can, screwdrivers, spare fuel hose, headlamp, zip ties, allen set, a spark plug or two. If i go on a long trip i wear a small backpack with a hydration pack with some other tools.

You definitely want to add a spark plug tool (and spare plug or two). But beyond that the tools you listed should cover most of the things you would need to deal with in a roadside repair situation. An extra set of points and a condenser maybe.
