I went back and noticed the electronic  tray and that there may lay some answers.

As Cal stated, cool down for a bit. Then come at this full steam ahead.

Your right calj and thanks for talking some sense into me.  I apologize if i came
off wrong towards you.

I seen on dotheton back in  2011 someone had their bike catch on fire.  I shorai tech responded

Judgeing by what he has to say if this was a over charging issue with my bike  the battery should have over charge protection now so this wouldn't happen.

I hooked up a cheap walmart battery I bought last year to it and the only thing that comes on is my
Tach light and the rectifier gets hot to the point I have to unhook the battery...

Good times.  The whole time I was pushing my bike home I was
Praying the thing didn't catch on fire.   Luckily there was just as
Bunch of smoke and battery acid spray

Wow, that was scary but ultimately lucky.  Sounds like the rectifier.

I took no offense at all. And I hope none of my replies seemed terse, tone deaf postings I'm afraid.

Whether your regulator is wonky or not, you really need to check whether or not all of your components in that tray are secured from sliding about or possibly grounding out against each other. Your regulator may be damaged now due to the fire, so that's not a guarantee to the original cause.

If everything feels secure, then you'll have to start looking for a faulty component, checking your wiring harness for melted spots, etc. And make sure you've used shrink wrap or other sleeving on the terminal ends in your tray to help isolate the components from each and the metal tray.

I am always suspicious of these trays being possible electrical shorts should any contact occur whole riding. I'd use the foam pads that came with the Shorai to insulate the interior sides, and the components on the bottom, then secure them. Reduces vibration, helps them stick tight to their location, and insulates them from the tray as a grounding or shorting material.

When you get the courage up, take heaps of pictures and I'd bet you'll see the origin.

Well guys.....

I decided to just keep this bike!  I feel like I'm married to it with all the ups and downs, good times and bad lol.

I'm going to order a ricks rectifier/regulator combo and that will help clean up a lot in the electronics pan.  I had a quick minute to pull the electronics pan out and only thing I seen on it is where the positive cable got extremely hot and melted some of the insulation, not all the way threw though.  I don't know when I'll have it back on the road bc I don't know what else has been affected plus funds are about out for this bike at the moment.

I straight up want to thank everyone that's whatched and posted on thread.  I seriously would have gave up on this build a long time ago if it wasn't for you guys.

Who knew something older then me with just 2 wheels and a motor could be so damn fun!

Just a little update guys

I sent the battery back to shorai Tuesday, hope to get the new one quick.  Also getting ready to order a ricks motorsports rec/reg combo.  It will clean up my electronics pan and it's a upgrade from stock.

When reg/rec comes in I'm going to reconfigure everything in the electronics tray and line the inside with the foam padding that comes with the shorai like Calj suggested.

Tomorrow I'm going to double check all my wires just to be sure nothing like this is to happen again.

Worked on the bike some today.  Lined the inside with the padding that comes with battery and everything bolted down good.

Bike charges great and rides awesome.  I just for back from putting 30 miles on it.  Now it's time to invest in a leather jacket and some gloves.  It's chilly on ky

Tired of looking at that ugly pigs tail of a stock brake hose so I ordered one of these from sling shot cycles.

Also grabbed a banjo bolt/brake light switch combo and a speed bleeder

Hose should look awesome on the bike

Lol thanks Ravie and cb.

Truthfully I feel relieved I'm keeping it too.  Every time I hop on this thing I have a smile that doesn't wipe off.

I've been riding it everyday to work even though it's been in the 40s in the morning and no leather jacket yet.  It's worth it when it's mid 70s on the ride home.  I'll ride it until there's snow on the ground

Plans over the winter are to take off all the side covers from the motor and get them either powdercoated or polished.  I like the idea of polished just bc you don't have to worry about them getting chipped up.  I also want to strip the front wheel and repaint it.  There's half a dozen small spots where it looks like the paint shrank when it dried.  Hardley noticeable but it's noticed by me.

Everything is working great, no charging issues at all.

It was kind of a good thing this all happend really.  I feel more comfortable with how everything is placed and the inside of the pan bringing lined with foam padding.

I've had enough of those kind of set backs to know where you're coming from.  On the positive side, they give you the opportunity to improve the bike.

Well fellas....

I sold it today.  Guy threw me a offer, I took it.

On the upside, say hello to my future brat build.  Wanting something the wife can ride on too.  It's a 78?  Cb750.  the price was right, 300$ w/ a title.  I'm on the fence about it though, I'm partial to 550s.

Haha yeah I know Ravie, my wife says the same thing sometimes.

I'm in ky, little far away.  I'm excited for starting a new project though.  The process of tracking down "the bike" and getting to tear into it is just as much a blast for me as it was riding.
