Don't fret. The engine is aluminum and all he's done is remove the oxidation that existed. It Weill return very quickly.
Going forward, use stainless steel brushes (you can get them at Harbor Freight, etc) to brush, scrub and clean the cases with. They remove the oxidation and don't scratch the aluminum. Avoid high pH cleansers too. These will turn the ally grey. There are aluminum specific/tolerant cleansers out there that work well.
Lastly, use a variety of ScotchBrite pads to put a finish on the parts after they're degreased. Carb cleaner is a decent choice for cleaning because it has an anti-oxidant in it unlike Brake Cleaner. Diesel fuel works great too, but its a bit messy.
