Finally! 6 years on....the 1969 Hishiki Sumiya CR750
« on: June 13, 2009, 05:46:18 AM »
We got some sunshine in Manchester today so I managed to persuade the wife to help get the CR750 out for some pictures. I have three jobs left to do now - cut back the screen to a sensible length, put two oil breather tubes in and start her up to time the ignition. However, I thought I'd get the pictures while it was sunny and post them as soon as possible.

A lot of the engine build has been posted on the ultimate engine thread and so here's where it finally led to, six years after starting the project, it's as good as complete.

In that time I've had help from a huge list of people, suppliers and general great folks on this forum, some like Axl are no longer with us but nevertheless, I want to thank you all, particularly people like Mark McGrew, Pete Rhodes, the Wife of course and our dear own Sam Green! Little does Sam know but when I was wavering on the idea of building a CR750, it was Chris Cullen's bike that was the first CR I saw in the flesh and from that moment on, it had to be done.

Rather than the 'usual' Daytona replicas or the traditional RC silver and red colours, I've gone for a copy of the 1969 Suzuka 8-hour winning colour scheme. The bike, ridden by Honda development riders Hishiki and Sumiya, won the race. This is the earliest 750 race victory I can find record of and so this is my tribute to that bike (The original is now housed in the warehouse at the Honda Motegi museum).

But, you have to start somewhere, so I sourced a donor bike through my good friend Pete Rhodes. As most of it was going to be junked, the year wasn't so important, enter the humble CB750 K3 formerly owned by Donald E. McGlothlin of Sunbury Ohio....

Sometimes over this last six years I wondered whether it was worth all the hassle (slotting a DOHC crank into a SOHC motor) and all the money. I could have just had KOS build one for me for the same money, but then I get to stand back and look at this finished bike and think....maybe it was worth every last drop of blood sweat and tears, just maybe.  ;)

Now the $64,000 question.....what do you guys think?!  ;D

Thanks Mike - hoping to start later today. I need to use the powered starter so it's a two man job. The Wife is out shopping right now so I have to wait until she gets back and then it's fairing off and hopefully we're away. I hope to film it as it could just be one big explosion  ;D

If not, I'll post the video clip up here...man I'm nervous! ???

What a fantastic homage to the 750 racing history. I'm sure the internals will more than live up to the aesthetics. Must feel great to experience the completion of such a serious, long-term project. Well done.

I dunno, I kinda like the before shot!  ;D

Without knowing you I still had an idea it would turn out this way, it's hard to find the words. You have done it justice LMP, it's nice to see a sculpture built without corners cut. We all share a little nervous tension for the next step.

Congratulations.

That's great Simon, never seen or heard of the livery before, reminds me of Rossi's Mugello colour scheme. When is the first public display going to be? don't suppose you are going to Mallory Festival of a 1000 Bikes in July.

Thanks guys - I can honestly say I've had so much help from this forum that it makes it important to me that you guys like the end result, even if it is a little odd looking :D

Well the wife came back late from the shops and I had to start the CB450 up after ignition change first as it's up for sale...dead plug and that was enough for the wife to head off inside, so no starting today unfortunately.

It might be kinda good news though because the rear crankcase breather isn't attached yet and I'm worried about starting it without that in place in case it spits oil all over the back tyre.

Still....won't be long now, fairing is off and ready so I can time her up fully when she runs....and I aim to rattle Sam's windows 30 miles away :D

Great looking bike, the color scheme is very "shagadelic". But I have to know all  about that exhaust? Did you build it? Buy it? Borrow it? Really would like something similar for my project. Any info would be appreciated.

DO WANT!

A lot of the engine build has been posted on the ultimate engine thread

Ultimate engine thread? Could you point me in the proper direction? I only ask cause I'm seriously contemplating taking my engine out and having it properly repainted by me  ;D
