The pictures are up on the photographers website. I have not finalized the purchase as I am waiting for a response on how much etc for what I am getting. They turned out pretty cool. I did not get a knee down that day but I am claiming old man knee and I had to preserve the finish of the bike for the VJMC show Saturday the 22.  ;D Next time we will drag chrome and knees!

IF anyone wants to see the preview pics click this link and click on ride group 2A.
Look for the little 400 with the giant riding it and you have found me!

Final re-polish since the track day. Heading to the Minnesota VJMC show in 3.5 hours.

330 miles since getting it back on the road. 55 of them on the track.

She turned over 12,000 miles while nipping at the heels of a GSXR1000!

There was some AWESOME competition at the VJMC show including Marks super nice K0 sand cast which is detailed here in the project section of the forum.
Project 13 won best in class HONDA and Mark's K0 won best in show. I have to say I am honored to be in the company of bikes such as his.
The trophy is a HUGE chromed 48mm wrench with class details etched on the body. It was a nasty rainy day that cleared up right at the end of the show but it was still a great turn out with lots of interesting vintage Japanese stuff.

Now what? I think I will pile on some more miles and have some more fun!

Hey Fastbroshi... I love your "expert" quote... My s/o took the motorcycle safety class and they teach them to use the kill switch and shut off the fuel everytime they stop. I cant count the times I have sputtered to a stop when I take her bike out to warm it up or cant get the damn thing started and realize that (like the good student she was) she remembers to shut the kill switch off every time she stops... SO I am an "expert" like you but it doesn't help at my house!

And yes 13 loved every minute of it.

Re: Project 13 CB400F. AMCA Viking Show St. Paul MN.
« Reply #209 on: June 12, 2010, 08:12:11 PM »
Hey all, I have been a little distracted lately and have not been posting. I still owe this thread some track day pictures and they are coming. As of Thursday my bike is sitting in the gallery of the AMCA Viking chapter Show in St.Paul MN. This is a great show with a little bit if EVERYTHING represented. From Honda, Harley, Norton, BSA, Vincent you name it there is one here and some you cant name. Anyway this show is about originality, which you all know I love but my bike is original to the owner not as Honda sent it out. My main goal all along was to get a bike in this show. But I didn't realize until it was/is too late that accessories even if they are vintage are not "judged" well. So I did a little research and apparently if I can prove they are period correct AND I have the original bits (which I do) they will take my proof into consideration. So seeing as I like controversy I am going for it. I have my documentation. (Old magazine ads, etc). I even have one of the versions of the Haynes manual that has the period mods that they recommend, and mags and shocks are on that list. It should be an interesting experience. These bikes are judged in a concours point system. You start with 100 points and you go DOWN from there as judges find stuff they don't like. Hopefully the work I did this winter detailing and routing everything where it should go will be enough to keep the judges happy.
13 has just under 400 miles on her now and keeps getting better.

Hey I will throw a challenge out there... Let's see if you are better than the judges. Post a list of anything YOU think is not correct or you might deduct for, of course I reserve the right to bicker and or delete! ;D ::)

Lets see if some eagle eyed enthusiasts can beat the trained judges.

I will post my AMCA score some time Sunday.

Best,
 Bill.

Hum.. Those rims were not offered as an option that year, or are you speaking of the color? Tires, yea.. but good luck getting OEM's. Engine guards were after market right? The shocks would surely not available then.. However as a Judge I would be hard pressed to deduct points.. but then I could be bias!  ;D

Those rims are period correct accessories for that bike and i think he even has the advertising and magazine adds to confirm this..... ;)

I'll bet the cam chain shaft plug isn't original. ;)  It's probably stainless with a hex socket head on it, along with an locking nut.

OK, nice job guys. You might actually be better than the judges this time! The judges missed the crash bars. Tires do not need to be stock as they are a safety item. But Mine are 25 year old Pirellis and they still rock as you can maybe see by the track day link.
The Koni shocks are indeed PERIOD correct and could be bought and installed if you had the cash and the original owner of this bike did. The Wheels were never offered as an option from Honda but again are a period correct item. I have documentation for the mags and the shocks. Combined they cost almost as much as the bike did in the day...The judges also missed the horns which look cool and are so loud they still make me laugh when used.

Honda Nut has been reading and paying attention. I used my custom tensioner set up and then I removed it and replaced the stock one! So you get 2 points for reading retention and lose one for not reading my mind when I removed it !

Retro rocket, you are also correct. I brought the documentation and they loved the history and the reason I left it on the bike but as they only judge on originality I lost the points. Though there was a National judge there and he said AMCA might start considering period modified bikes in the future.
Hey Smpls70, the 550 next to mine was Doug's his stuff is ALL that perfect he took 99.75 points on his 3000 mile bike. Super nice, he was trying to convince me to finish going stock and go for more points next year.

Zaipai, the odd bits are all after market. Honda didn't offer optional mag wheels for the SOHC series. You had to go with Shelby, EPM , Morris, Lester, Hayashi and others to get decent mag wheels. Konis and mags like this were pretty normal on euro bikes but not to common on small bikes such as the 400. People just couldn't afford them. Which is why I think they are so cool now!

Traveler got the case guards first so he gets the most points. I have to pat Hondanut on the back as he got an item pretty much no one could see but it was mounted at one time! And he must have read ALL of my posts? I usually would leave it in place but removed it this time for originality.

So how did 13 do you ask?

94.5 points out of 100. Good enough for a Jr. 1st. which is the highest award you can win in your first event/show with the AMCA. The judges loved the aftermarket bits but are required to deduct points as they are not as it left the factory. They liked the documentation and I even brought in a box of the original stuff just to show I had all the good bits to put it back to stock. But as stated before ORIGINAL is all that counts with the AMCA either original original or restored to original. Anyway, you can show a bike every year and keep improving on it until you reach the top. They suggested that the bike would be a 99.5-99.75 with all the original bits re-attached. SO I have to decide if I leave it alone and love it as is or take the time next winter to bring it to totally stock and try and go for a Sr award.

But three firsts in three shows is pretty satisfying and knowing that it can still tear up the track is just frosting on the cake.

Thanks for the favorable judging, you are all welcome in my garage anytime!

I have been riding "13" a bit while building my 750 Rat and my GL1000 cafe. We took a gaggle of 400Fs to the local "bearded lady" event in NE Minneapolis a couple of weekends ago. Great looking bikes and some decent people watching to!

4 400Fs. Two 75's one '76 and a 90. My partners in 400cc crime, Susan, Kiri and Ross.

If you think one 400 draws a crowd you should see what 5 does! At one time we had 5 400Fs sitting in one place. Just the red alone was overwhelming! There was a local metro guy (I forgot his name) with a very Japanese retro vibe red 400F. IF you don't know just google 400F Japan and you will see you may not understand but you will see. LOL
