opposed piston opposed cylinder 2 stroke.

an interesting idea.

EcoMotors has a design called OPOC, Opposed Piston Opposed Cylinder. The design is just what it says, as you can see above, with 2 cylinders and 4 pistons. Peter Hofbauer came up with the idea when he was at Volkswagen
, the outboard pistons take the place of the cylinder head and each piston only travels half the distance necessary for the full stroke, allowing higher engine speeds. An electrically controlled turbocharger can be used when necessary with adjustable boost, it can even spin up before the engine starts to give instant boost.

The engine can be built in a modular fashion, allowing more cylinders to be added in pairs with a clutch between the modules so one pair can be used at start or light load with the clutch adding more cylinders when required.

The difference between the first engine posted and the other two is that in the first one there is only one crankshaft operating two pairs of opposing pistons, and no matter how many more pairs are added on there will still only be one crankshaft.  That's a major difference in the basic design and would be much lighter and probably much more efficient.

It probably never caught on because it's so slow.

The length of the con rods to the outer pistons worries me. A lot more reciprocating mass, and a lot more stretch, and a lot more stress.

@ Uncle Ernie: Lawl. It IS slow, isn't it? :P
No.

Course I'm just a layman, but it seems odd to put that much stress on a piston pin.  On most engines the connecting rod is connected to the piston in such a way that the force being exerted is transmitted (pushed) directly to the rod.  In this engine all of the force is being translated to the pin (which reverses the force from a pushing to a pulling motion) and THEN to the rod.  Seems like a weak link, though the fact that it's a 2-stroke may alleviate that issue.

Compression and tension, tensile yielding and failure is probably what you have to worry about with the connecting rods in the first engine. Just like most metal they yield in tension lower than they would in compression. If the length gets long like mlinder was commenting on you would have to be worried about a moment failure too.

I'll stick with my SOHC 750 motor it sounds like a little ferrari. this weird motor design cant sound cool.

IMO, there are a few motors that sound awesome, chevy 327, ford 302, the almighty hemi, SOHC4s, and the ford flat head 8.   every other car company needs to make their motors sound like them.

and that's all that matters in life- a cool sounding motor ;D

Wicked engine to bring back!  I often lay in bed at night and dream of ways to make a "totally NEW" fueled engine...I've done many sketches on the john...scribbles at my desk...beautiful blueprints in my head....only to find out it's already been done or tried to some extent.  SOMEDAY...I'd like to think I'll be the one to revolutionize fuel buring machines...ahahaha  One can have a dream!...and that same one can Strap that dream between it's legs and RIDE!!!
