am starting my cb 750 cafe project, got lots of parts. am trying to decide weather to go stock engine or the 836 cc kit and evans ( edwards??) ANDREWS, ya, thats it!.. D grind cam that i have here. i need to have a dependable engine so am curious about the big bore kit,carburation and cam. any suggestions would be appreciated. i have 3 racks of stock carbs but may purchase cr's. have a 4 into 1 , unknown origin and will purchase an aftermarket silencer. have full and free access to a fully equipped machine and welding shop, may fab and install a removable frame rail kit to allow me acces to the top of the engine without removing it. the frame will be done in por 15 and clearcoated. am going to build the rear sets ( again, any suggestions welcome) from aluminum stock. ignition will be aftermarket electronic, i think starter will be removed and kicker only, no center stand. body to be done in black metal flake.
waddya think??
am gonna figure out how to upload some pics a.s.a.p. but not very interesting at this point.

Nope it just barely fits in there. It is a 80/90-21 up front and a 140/90-16 in the back. Bike is stored for winter but here are some from the builder chopstar500...

It handles great! I have since changed the front of the bike to accommodate a disc brake, I have 550 forks up front with and inch cut on the springs and lowered in the trees.

my bores on stock jugs measure as 2.403 all across, bores are still round.
question, is this in range of a hone and new rings, cant find min/max #s any where.
opinions anyone?

Hey Zig! I just looked in my manual... and the standard bore for the K8 is 2.4016"-2.4019".... with a service limit of 2.4055"... so at 2.403 it looks like you're in the green with a couple thou' to go.

I'm pretty sure the bores stayed the same through the years...but you may want to check for yours specific there.

thanks for that hednut. manual for k5 calls stock bore at 2.402 but doesnt give me a service limit. your k8 has a service limit of .004 so, as you say, i should be good to go. are some scars in one cyl due to a broken ring, will ask nordic if they will hone out. still trying to decide, big bore or stock.....hmmmmm.

hay all.
finally removed a piston from spare engine to id and search for rings. they are marked "haindst 900cc" that makes them "Henry Abe Industries" castings. i thought was a 836 cc kit in there! this isnt good news, from what i have read the rings may be hard to find.
was thinking about rebuilding this bike with a stock ( almost) engine and over a couple of years, bench building a big bore engine with a garrett small engine turbo, mikuni large throat carb, low compression as req'd for turbo etc, etc. but am i basing this on a set of pistons i cant find rings for?
you are probably saying to yerself "so buy a wiseco kit".... is cause im cheap, tighter than a sharks ass (water tight) , 664$us for the wiseco kit.

summary.
where can i find rings and boring specs for the haindst 900 cc kit?
waddya think about a small engine turbo installed on a sohc 750cc aka 836cc or 900cc??
anybody interested in a set of henry abe 900cc pistons?

Hey Zig! I like your idea of getting a stocker engine in the bike...riding, enjoying...all the while building a bench MONSTER...to throw in for BRRRAAAAP! when she's ready. I think that's a genius plan! I'm also a tight-ass when it comes to money! ahah

That said...my project is creeping very slowly lately...I had about an hour this weekend to go in there and do a little...and I wasted most of the dang' time dreaming about it being finished..ahah But got a little wire-brushing and cleaning done.

Good luck with the rings for those 900's...it'd be cool...maybe try measuring them and matching to some other bike's stock rings? That'll take some leg work...

looking in base of engine found what appears to be heat discoloration around one of the crank lobes, checked spare engine and it is also discoloured, any ideas?

Hednut...ssup?
taking barrells down to Nordic tomorrow, am gonna stay stock cc's, he is gonna hone bores for next to 0$. head is prob going to Boston in the next few weeks, just gotta figure out the cam, i want something that will take advantage of the headwork. may use andrews cam i have here if i can get some opinions of its suitability.
not much snow eh? (yeah, i said "eh" guys, we do that up here) are you one of those snow machine dudes praying to the gods of snow every night??

I can't tell you much about the pistons, but I know the discolored crank has come up before. That's normal, due to heat treating the gear if I remember right.

HeyO! That's great to hear! Nordic will do it for cheap!....man I wish I knew that before I self-done mine. And HEAD-TO-Boston! Fantastic....who's there that does headwork?? Is it MRieck? YESS, the snow situation is poo....too cold and snowy to pull out the bikes! But not enough for the excellent riding. I'm not much of a snow-prayer...got rid of the sled a while back.... I can't wait for SUMMER AGAIN! (my garage is cold) Good luck on everything! Keep us posted! Cheers!

Not sure I understnad....you said it had a 900 kit, then you mentioned stock...did you get another cylinder off eBay or something?
