2nd Annual SOHC Hoosier Fall Ride, Open to Buckeyes, etc.
« on: August 03, 2011, 11:48:17 AM »
Hi everyone. As a result of my recent excursion into SE Indiana, a place I've ridden many times before, I am enticed to schedule another Fall ride. I'll be going by myself if no one else can. But if its like last year, it could be a real nice group. Prelim route would be to meet in Greensburg under the world famous Tower Tree. take 421 to 50 to 262 (where it gets real interesting) to 56/156 to 250, back track on 56N to 56E which has a stunning view of the river (hence the backtrack). Reconnect to 156S/56S Scenic Highway to Madison. Stop at Shipley's Tavern for famous burger and softdrink/NA beer (no alcohol please). Head N on 421 to 62 (Chief White Eye Trail) to 129 N to 62E again to Dillsboro. Head home from there or head E on 50 to Aurora, catch 350W to 421 to add some miles.  A final additional leg could be 229 N to Metamora, and home on 52

All told about 300-350 miles. At least half will be curvy, scenic or both. Several places where one can head home if its getting too long.  I'll nail it down more as it evolves. Helmets required and as much additional safety gear as you prefer.

Mark your calendar. Saturday September 17th. Let me know how that works, we'll change to accomodate the biggest crowd, maybe, as long as it accomodates me.   ;)   Hope you guys with the SOHCs can make it but all models welcome.

I'm intriged.  Going to follow along with the planning.  Bit of a hike for a Saturday ride, but then I did go to CA for a 3 day show. ;) :)

Should be fun. A 300 to 400 mile Saturday makes for great memories. The last ice age had scraped Indiana flat under a mile of ice, down to about 70 miles south of Indianapolis. Then the floods from the melting receding ice left southern Indiana with hills and streams and valleys, none too severe, but plenty to make for good riding. But you gotta go the 70 miles first... to get there, and last, to get home.

I think that's about how far we went last year, some more as they came from further away.

Just saw your message Indyfour, you're on the list!

The last time I drove through part of Indiana was 36 hours after the big storm this winter.  All I saw was glare ice for 15 miles, at 10 mph with a P/U & trailer.  Would be nice to see what it looks like without the snow.  Off to check the map.

The weather here has basically been the total opposite of that lately.  Mid 90deg F days and little rain.  I think my lawn may catch on fire any day now.   ::)

Most lawns around here are as yellow as the wheat fields.  Finally got some real rain today though.  Mid September is fall colour time up here.

We won't get much Fall Color in September, unless the unusually dry summer speeds it up. usually not till October though. When it happens, the leaf peepers in the RVs and SUVs dominate the back roads and motorcycling becomes tedious.  So we'll ride first and peep later.

So I told them at work I was thinking of going down to Indy for a Saturday ride in September.  Said I would have to take the Friday off to trailer the bike down, then ride Saturday, and come back Sunday.  About 19 hours of driving.  Reaction was basically, sounds like fun. ;D

Guess that makes me a 'strong maybe' MCRider.  Have to check into route(s) down, and accommodation.  Oh, and get some miles on the 550 so its all sorted, and reliable. ;) :)

I hope I can make it, last year was a good time at just over 430 miles for me and shea. A little cool in the a.m. But that's the way I like it.

I am currently planing on a 4 day trip to the gap with a group of 7, I'll be the only SOHC.

My wife and I don't usually do much vacationing apart so I am not sure if I can get away with 2 weekends in 3 weeks. We"ll play it by ear and see how it goes.

Bump for Interest.

The first post is the plan. See no need to change it. Weather will be perfect.  ;)

Me and IndyFour so far, anyone else?

Helmets required (no skidlids or brain buckets), boots, gloves, long pants and long sleeve shirt/jacket recommended, and as much additional safety gear as you prefer.

OK, so I have a bike for the fall ride :), bought the 85 Interceptor.   19K Km (11K miles), just need to put on some fresh tires.  Has some road rash on the right side.  Seems the PO thought it was a good idea to try and get some extra miles out of the original (rock hard) 25 year old tires.  No. ::)  So pictures only from the left for a while. ;D ;D

Trip planning has commenced.  How have the temperatures been, as I need to organize my personal gear.

Great news, would have liked to seen your CB, but a ride is a ride. Temps are very pleasant now, avg 65-70. But 10 days could bring colder or warmer. On average this is the best month. But you know there really is no average day. Its just the mathmatical gymnastic of days that are too hot and days that are too cold.   ;)

OK, so I'll interpet that to mean, come prepared for just about anything I would get up here. ;) :)

Yeah it's to bad the CB won't be ready.  However, the point is to enjoy the ride, and there isn't sufficient time to make sure everything checks out.  Also being a bit selfish.  This way the CB stays super clean, and I can show it again this fall. ;)

yeah, well its the weather right?   ;)  But mid-september is possibly got the best days of the year, so lets plan for (hope for) one of those. Start the morning in the 50s, kiss 80 by mid-day and get home before 60s. Partially cloudy (partly sunny.

Could be 60 and drizzly all day. Or just simply way overcast. Outside chance of it being real warm, 80+ midday with bright sunshine.

Last year was a week later and it was a beautiful day all day. I wore my electric vest as i am wont to do, and turned it on in the morning and evening. Off thru the day.

I'll definitely be packing some cool weather stuff.  I hate being cold. :)  Not sure I want to try plugging warmers into the 750 just yet though.  Layers on / layers off, and sounds like, layers back on.

Printed out your tentative route from the 1st post, and followed it using Google map.  Only part I couldn't hook up was the last alternative - 229N to Metamora(?), 52 back.   While checking out the route, thought this also looked interesting, 50W to 101N (?), to 350W to 421N. :)

Oh what a conundrum....now to decide which bike to ride!  Two old Interceptors riding together is just about as rare as two old CBs.  I guess I'll have to wait and see if Raef or others will be attending....and how happy my 550 is by then.  There's the comfort factor too.....400 miles of 6'3" me folded over on a little 550 = pain.  The discomfort is worth it, though, if we have a whole gaggle of CBs going.  I'll have to decide later I suppose.

Glad you're making it down, Tintop!

Talked to CBJoe offline and it looks like he and Rose have plans that weekend.  Jay was a maybe.
