Looking for recommendations for Australian and New Zealand red wines ... preferably Cabernet Sauvignon ... or whatever else you would recommend.

Hi Harry, the wife has a few days off and there are piles of good Aussie wines so she said to take a look at this list of Cab Sav makers and have a read, there's a pile of reviews with ratings on this page..... ;)

http://www.webwombat.com.au/lifestyle/food_wine/wine/cabernet-sauvignon.htm

The wifes Mother lives in NZ wine country and is a bit of a wine buff {loves the reds} so next time i talk to her i'll see what she recommends....

The only one that I have personally had was Yellow Tail. It was very good.
Dedicated to Sgt. Howard Bruckner 1950 - 1969. KIA LONG KHANH.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

Can't go wrong with BANROCK STATION their stuff is very drinkable, their MOSCATO white is great, we knocked off two bottles last night, it's Aussie stuff too amazingly!
Prefer the sweet and fizzy Italian wines right now, REUNITE is my fav right now, very yummy. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Hey Aussie wines are cheap here, like $6 or $7 a bottle, our stuff is waaay over priced! ;D
I got plenty to reccomend as I used to do wine tours around the bay but at what price? :(
Cheap and cheerful is my motto around wine, in fact I'm such a wine snob I think nothing of dumping any reds that taste like vinegar (and some of the most expensive do but people too scared to say they taste like crap) I'll happily half and half them with lemonade to give them some sparkle. ;)

Yellow tail is a steady perfomer.  Penfolds Koonunga Hill CS is excellent.

Montana, Ngatarawa, Te Awa, just a few local wineries making their own stuff.

Hi guys,
I'm not a white wine drinker but my wife is and she has found the best white wine for her is a local Waiheke Island white called Man 'O' War Bay Pinot Gris. She cannot drink Sav Blanc as it has to higher sulphate content and it makes her "Lupus" (auto-immune disease) flare up.
Another that she like is a Marlborough Pinot Gris called "Roaring Meg".
Our neighbour's are Sav Blanc drinkers and they swear by "Wither Hills" which is another Marlborough White.
For those of you who want to do a little research, here is a list of some of the vineyards on the island. Some of these establishments have won some pretty prestigious awards in overseas wine competition.
Cable Bay
Mud brick
Goldwater Estate
Te Whau Wineries
Hay Paddock
Saratoga wines
Passage Rock
Kennedy Point
Man "O" War Bay Wineries. These are just some of the 27 (I think ) wine producing vineyards on my little rock here in the Hauraki Gulf Auckland.

As for the red's all the above produce some lovely red wines. depending on what you like Kennedy Point wineries recently produces a world class gold medal award winning Syrah, there are some really nice reds of all types here on the island, but the country as a who;e produces some lovely reds.
Mt Difficulty does a really nice Pinot Noir, there are some really nice reds coming out of Central Otago as well.

"It all comes down to what you like really.

Mission Estate (where we hold some damn good international concerts)here in Napier make a very good Merlot.
Two Gates (which is out by my prison) turn out some stuff worth considering.
Villa Maria, Te Mata, so many wineries around here that turn out good drinkable stuff.
When I did wine trails I drove a stretch limousine and most clients flew in from overseas to just do the wine trails, the boot used to get so full of cases of wine I would need to use the gas operated rear shocks to keep the car level, getting tipped $200 was not out of the question for me in those days. ;)

Thanks for all the great ideas.  I will have to check out the liquor store.  Yes, we have not caught up with the times; all spirits, wines and beer must be purchased from government run or agency stores.

But they do carry a wide selection of imported wines.

im a cab guy but most of the aussie stuff ive tried has been harsh.... the soil down under is sandy and causes thicker skins and that transfers to the reds while the skins sit on the wine during fermentation... the only aussie cab ive had and liked has been fish eye and its cheap

They obviously don't sell any Penfolds Vintage Grange over there, up to $50,000 for 1 bottle.... :o ;D Even the 2006 vintage is $500 a bottle...

Hey Cranky,
just my 2 bob but look for Aussie Cabernets from Coonawarra (bigger richer styles) but avoid 2008 heat wave year or try Maragret River from Western Australia (finer more structure-tanin bordeaux like) and for New Zealand I find Napier as suggested before but Hwkes Bay & Martinborough(craggy range is a great winery but $$$) still plenty from that are affordable and good. Cheers

Jacobs Creek drinks well for a cheapish Red.....

Matua, it's a new winery but getting good press on their wines, they also give away free key rings!
