Value of an NOS stock tank?
« on: June 24, 2012, 05:02:01 AM »
Hi all-

I've got a line on a NOS cb750 tank.  Still in the factory box in the factory plastic.  Has RH petcock and early style stripe, not sure on the color though, due to the lighting in the picture.  I think it is probably Briar Brown Metallic, but it could be candy garnett brown, not sure.

Of the K2 colors, Briar brown is probably the ugliest and least desirable, so I'm not sure what to think the worth of it is.  One of those things where being rare isn't necessarily worth much?  I'd like to arrive at a fair price to both of us, but am also interested in "market value" as I'm not sure if I would sell it or keep it.

And I know, buy it for 20 bucks, and sell it to "me" for 50, yadda ya. :P

Thoughts?  I see yamiya has an NOS candy garnett brown tank for 1200, do people buy that stuff at that price? :o

take some pictures of it and scan ebay.  Yamiya's tanks are for K0's and I think are more rare to find.  I have seen some good conditioned tanks on ebay go from 200 to 400 dollars depending on the condition.  Hell I've seen a lot of #$%*ty tanks go for around 100.

I am about to post pictures of the one I got a while back for 60 to show the condition and after the strip.

I saw a CB750 tank of earlier 70's model on eBay, a couple of months ago. New tank in box, gold in color if I remember right. Sold from Cyprus, asking price £1000! I don't know how much it finally went for.
It's possible to find a complete not so bad CB750 for that money, a café racer project. :-\

There is an add about an almost complete tank with side covers for $1150 US here. This is very cheap compared with new produced stuff from Japan  http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-CB-CB750-FRESHLY-PAINTED-TANK-SIDE-COVERS-W-EMBLEMS-BEAUTIFUL-/160826725093?hash=item25720512e5&item=160826725093&pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

I was thinking about  a tank + side covers from Yamiya, but the price was way too high! Thats new produced parts and should cost less. The stuff to be attached on the tank cost a lot as well. It seems that everything here cost much more than possible to find elsewhere. All tanks are also the old models with petcock on right side. Left side on my K6.

For me is $1000 US including shipping and local tax here maximum to make me to buy tank + side covers complete with all trims, just to put it on my bike.
That's less than half price of what Yamiya want today.

A NOS 750 wrinkle tank would go for thousands, otherwise I would say in the 400 range. I bought a NOS NIB red 400F tank at a swap meet about 10 years ago for 100.

Tanks on eBay for about $100US looks horrible! Something found on a scrapyard of crashed bikes. Really bad shape not possible to repair without 1kg filler.
On top of that a professional paint job and stripes that can be found on eBay to be covered with another layer of clear coat.
The good ones might disappear before I see them? :o :D

I think it's better to buy a complete bike, take the parts you need and sell the left overs.

It depends if someone wants the tank badly enough.
A NOS sulphur yellow tank (76 CB750F) sold on EBay recently for $800. Search EBay completed auctions for prices.

I picked up a 1970 NOS blue / green tank 2 years ago for $350 in the OEM box. The inside was spotless and still had the oil protection on the inside. The petcock holes were still covered with the tape used before painting. There was a small area of bubble under the paint which is probably why it was still in the box. I changed the color to candy gold so the bubble was no issue. I thought that was a fair price for the tank for both parties.

I just paid $400 for a really nice 75 planet blue tank, broken gas latch and some minor scratches, Tank was super clean inside. Not near a nos thank though.

I think 400 is on the low side, but color would matter.. not like there is a glut of NOS tanks around...

I'd say $400-500 is a fair price, not sure I would pay it though. obviously these are getting hard to come by, so very hard to put a value on.

If you want to spend money on a gas tank get a tank made out of .060 thousandths aluminum.  Then you really have something. :)

DO you have pics? Maybe you are interested in trading for a knee dented 550F tank?
