CB550 Rear disc conversion
« on: August 16, 2012, 08:13:03 PM »
So I saw a video on youtube where a guy used a 750 hub and disc for a rear disc conversion on a 550 and I started wondering if a 750 front hub will fit a 550 rear axle without any mods?

I think the easy way to approach it would be to just grab the whole rear end off of a 750F.  Slightly longer swingarm but the pivot point width on the 750 arm should be real close to the 550.  Might have to shim out/in the sprockets.

Using a front wheel for the rear is not easily done. A mill and a lathe help alot.
Using a 750 disc/rear wheel and swingarm would get you more than halfway there.

Pics are a 750 front wheel converted to rear wheel use on a 750. Bearings needed to be changed to 20mm, adapters needed for sprocket and disc, new axle spacers needed, caliper mount made,etc...

Nope.
This wheel replaced a Shelby-Dowd wheel that also didnt have a cush drive.

The one I am building, and have build before, do have a damper drive. But like fishhead says it involves some work.

Wow that's cool! What size rim?

You and I are going to have to deal on something someday. Your stuff is too cool.  Maybe a 4 piston caliper setup for a 75F?

Anyway, for those watching, that's a cross 2, ALL INSIDE spoke pattern.

Where'd you get the spokes?

The rim is 18 X 2.5.

I believe the spokes are heavy gauge front CB/GL that were cut down and rethreaded (with a proper thread roller). I used inner lacing because it lined up best with the rim holes.

The width of the pivot is the same, so it should bolt up fine.
