They are rivets.  You can carefully drill off the head of the rivet, gently remove the VIN TAG, and then re-attach the tag with new rivets after re-finishing the frame.

Also I have put some of my bike and my friends 1971 K1 that i am restoring. I`ll apologize in advance for the quality of the photos but they were taken on a very cheap Kodak 110. The first pic with your wife on the bike

That is actually a Honda color called Topaz Fire sprayed over a gold metalic base. What you think are flames is actually real smoke under the coats of clear. A technique I learned from my dad. The pictures dont do it justice. I should have kept that bike it was a beast. Fastest 750 around even out ran some 750 Kawasaki and could keep up with the 900. Ahh those were the days.

My cylinder shipped out today from Cycle X. Hopefully be here by Monday. Very good company with fast service......Gary

For everyone else check these out: http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/118/3372/=jdp5qi
I and others here have used them.

The original rivets are more like tiny nails. They extend into the inside of the neck slightly. In the past I have been able to push them out from the inside a 1/16th of an inch or so. That allowed me to grab them from the outside with a pair of needle-nose pliers and carefully work them out without damaging the plate.

Great pix btw! :)

Thanks Cycle Ranger. These are more the old style rivets that dont have a mandril. My dad worked in the aircraft plants during world war 2. The rivets they used required two people, one to drive the rivet and one to hold the bucking bar behind it which flared the other end. Thanks again for your input...........Gary

I havent worked on the bike much lately, been really sick with a chest cold, but I`m feeling better now and I`ve got the frame and related parts ready to send to the sandblaster and then to the painter. Ordered my tapered bearings for the steering stem from all balls, Bronze bushings for the swing arm, A boat load of parts from Service Honda : handlebars, fork seals, fork boots, swing arm , collar and seals, left handle bar switch, assorted nuts and bolts. Rebuilt master cylinder from forum member Shortrounds and a rebuilt caliper from Ebay. My cylinder is due in today from Cycle X. I`m gonna have to rob a bank if I order anything else. lol Pictures when the parts arrive.btw The 27th is my birthday I told my wife this was my birthday present.......just didnt tell how I spent..........Gary

Got my front caliper in today and it looks really nice. The question I have is this. Is ther supposed to be something between the piston and pad ? also there is a groove in the piston what is that for ? And which end goes into the caliper?............Gary

Finished redoing my forks. Completely disassembled cleaned out all of the gunk and replaced the seal and o-rings.Probably should have cleaned the finger prints off before I photoed but I was in a hurry. lol. I now know that forty year old oil smells like a dead dinosaur. Also I need some advice.......The last pictures aer of my cam chain guide the short one came out of my motor the long one is a new replacement from Cycle X. Tim from Cycle X says this is the replacement for the short one. I want to be sure before I build my engine back. Can anyone verify that the lo0ng one will work instead ?. Thanks......Gary
